Nissan deserve a huge amount of credit for their early adoption approach to electric transport. Their Nissan Leaf has been readily available since 2009/2010, some 10 years before this apparent electric car revolution we are seeing worldwide. While their early models did not offer the 200+ miles ranges we are now experiencing with modern product, the Leaf brought affordability and practicality to EV owners in the UK.
Having gone through several battery improvements and model revisions, 2020 will present two options of Leaf – a standard 150ps model with a 168 miles WLTP range and an “e+” with 217ps and WLTP ranges of circa 239 miles. For any personal or business customer comparing genuine EV options to the best-selling combustion hatchbacks (VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus), the Leaf is one to add to the list.
A standard Leaf, with its 40kWh lithium-ion battery, will take around 7-8 hours to fully charge on a 7kW home charge point via its Type 2 charge port. With a domestic 3-pin socket taking upwards of 20 hours, an external charge point is the way forwards. Also note that the fast charge port is a CHAdeMO as opposed to the CCS system which is used across many other models. A 50kW rapid charge system will take the vehicle from 20-80% in around an hour.
For the E+, the bigger 62kWh battery will take around 11-12 hours to charge on a 7kW home charge point and 20-80% will be achievable via a rapid charge solution in about an hour and 30 minutes.
The entry model, the Acenta, is Nissan’s basic (and cheaper) option for EV drivers. The key facets include navigation, safety shield technology (land departure warning/emergency braking/intelligent lane assist/pedestrian recognition), Nissan Connect (telematics/rear view camera, air conditioning pre-set), Apple CarPlay and 16” alloys.
Want to replace your next company car with a cost-effective electric option? Or you just want to replace your personal car with something affordable? Select the Nissan Leaf and you won’t be disappointed.
