Are Porsche really producing electric cars? If there was one manufacturer which could provide credence to the electrification of automobiles it would have to be Porsche. Their reputation for producing the ultimate driving machines is paramount – they possess a range of exquisite cars including the iconic 911, the functional Panamera and the ever-popular SUV in the form of the Macan. Do Porsche ever produce a bad car?
The Taycan is the Porsche answer to the growing electric car segment. The Taycan, or “Soul, electrified” as the Porsche team describe it, brings the luxury and practicality of the Panamera but with sporty and edgy features of the 911. With prices starting from £80,000 this is unlikely to be a mass-market solution but one which will bring an incredibly exciting proposition to the luxury EV segment. For the last couple of years business owners, or those personal customers with a healthy budget, have been restricted to the Tesla Model S (not that it is an issue). However, there really wasn’t a choice outside of that. Many of latest additions have been SUV/4×4 product. The Taycan is a true game-changer for BEV customers and 2020 will be a key year in the Tesla v Porsche debate.
Your introduction to the Porsche Taycan begins with the “4S”. While we don’t want to use the term “base” model, as this suggests a cheaper electric car, their entry model is aimed at being a more affordable luxury electric car solution. Almost certainly this will be making those personal or business customers reviewing a Model S (or high-specification Jaguar I Pace and Audi E-Tron) to think twice. Starting from around £84,000 for the 79kWh lithium-ion battery, this option will offer an impressive 530ps, 0-62 times of 4 seconds and a WLTP range of around 200 miles on a full charge (Porsche website suggests a real world range of about 184 miles). For around £89,000 you can improve the battery on the 4S into a more substantial 93kWh lithium-ion battery solution. While 0-62 times remain at around 4 seconds, there is an additional 71ps of power coupled with around 230 miles of range. In the world of EVs, range is becoming everything.
Will die-hard petrol Porsche owners be turning away from a Panamera or 911 and into the new EV prospect? With company car tax changes hitting in April 2020, you will certainly have some strong arguments to go pure electric. So are Porsche the perfect EV? Where Porsche have been consistent with the Taycan is with the specification; the cars lack some of the standard features you get from their competitors. However, unlike the rest of the options, you can personalise and select the options which are perfect for you. If you can pay the premium for the Porsche, you are in for a great experience.
