What is the most important, and iconic, electric car to date? There really is no argument or controversy; without a doubt this is the Model S from Elon Musk’s Tesla group. The world’s first practical, functional and exciting EV came to fruition in 2012 – it is scary to think that Tesla are still such a new company and innovator. While the Model S was not the first electric car by any stretch (the Nissan Leaf does need a gentle mention), it was really the first indication of an exciting eco car future; luxury, speed, range and spacious clearly describe the defining Model S.
The ”S” is very much a BMW 5/7 series, Mercedes E/S Class and Audi A6/A8 alternative for UK drivers. The world of luxury saloons (or sedans), are a crucial part of the UK’s company car market, expect some significant upheaval with the Tesla given the company car tax changes. However, the cost-price of an S is slightly obstructive. Currently available in a Long-Range format at around £77,000 and a Performance format at a shade over £92,000, this car is very much aimed at company directors and management, or personal contact hire customers with healthy budgets. This is precisely why the Model 3 and upcoming Model Y have been introduced.
Battery size and technology has allowed the Model S to be one of the only cars capable of satisfying high-mileage drivers. The Long Range utilises a 96kWh lithium-ion battery which has a WLTP range of 379 miles, 0-62 times of 3.7 seconds (yes, 3.7 seconds!), 155mph top speeds and 417ps. What you have to consider is that the Model S, via its All-Wheel Drive independent motor solution, will provide similar performance to a BMW M5 or Audi RS6. Who said that electric cars weren’t fun?
Charging times are very much a Tesla speciality and for those customers who priorities this over anything, the Tesla is very much the leading product to go for. The Type 2 Charge port allows nearly 17kW AC, which allows the vehicle to be fully-charged in just over 7 hours; a standard 7kW home unit will take over 12 hours. If you are utilising the supercharger network which Tesla provide throughout the UK and Europe (just check your mobile application for locations), you can enjoy up to 200kW DC. This will get you from 10-80 % in 30-40 minutes – Tesla quote 133 miles for every 15 minutes of charge. Statistically this dissipates any range-anxiety concerns.
Specification-wise, the Long Range offers 19” alloys, artificial leather interior, heated front/rear seats, navigation, tinted glass roof, power-folding/heated door mirrors, 17” touchscreen, autopilot hardware (8 camera system with 12 ultrasonic sonars),keyless entry and LED lighting.
Is there another manufacturer capable of tempting you away from the Model S? Or is this the best electric company car to lease?
