Leasing a BMW iX in the UK

While 2020, and 2021, were slow years for BMW’s electrification project, as 2022 approached the German manufacturer sprang into action with their commitment to deliver three crucial electric cars during 2022 – the i4 gran coupe, the iX3 SUV and this ultimate machine, the iX. While the iX3 is very much a replica of the X3 (diesel / petrol), the iX is designed to provide cutting-edge 5th generation eDrive tech to those customers needing a bigger SUV akin to their petrol and diesel X5 platform.

However, for reference, BMW refer to this car as a “Sports Activity Vehicle”. Regardless, for personal and business leasing customers looking at comparisons for the Audi e-Tron, Tesla Model Y or X, Mercedes EQC or EQS SUV they should consider the latest deals on the BMW iX.

BMW are looking to be leaders in automotive electrification and these recent additions, which compliment their previous i3 hatchback and i8 supercar innovations, certainly present a persuasive argument. But are BMW providing good motor (engine) choices to their UK customers? In their defence, while BMW have been slower compared to other design teams, through their different battery and specification choices, there is a clear understanding that personal, business and salary sacrifice all have different requirements from their EV.

In terms of battery options on your next new BMW iX please see below

  • 40 – a 71 kWh usable lithium battery which produces 240 kW of power (or 322 hp equivalent) and is capable of 124 mph top speeds and 6.1 second 0-62 times. With an overall real-world range of 215 miles (185 miles in winter and 245 miles in summer) and charging maximums of 11 kW AC (enables 0 - 100% in just under 8 hours) and 150 kW DC rapid charging (enables 10 - 80% in just over 30 mins);
  •  50 – a 105 kWh usable lithium battery which produces 385 kW of power (or 516 hp equivalent) and is capable of 124 mph top speeds and 4.6 second 0-62 times. With an overall real-world range of 315 miles (265 miles in winter and 355 miles in summer) and charging maximums of 11 kW AC (enables 0 - 100% in just over 11 hours) and 200 kW DC rapid charging (enables 10 - 80% in just over 30 mins); and
  • M60 – a 105 kWh usable lithium battery which produces 455 kW of power (or 610hp equivalent) and is capable of 155 mph top speeds and 3.8 second 0-62 times. With an overall real-world range of 300 miles (255 miles in winter and 340 miles in summer) and charging maximums of 11 kW AC (enables 0 -100% in just over 11 hours) and 200 kW DC rapid charging (enables 10 -80% in just over 30 mins).

With electric cars in the UK much of what you pay for is the battery capability, and technology, as this determines the experience you will have. For higher-mileage customers, particularly those covering 15,000 – 20,000 per annum and above, the BMW iX is a perfect option to select based on its incredible range. But for lower-mileage drivers, or those with a specific budget, the smaller battery “40” should be the right solution.

And on specification, BMW have emulated the approach from their combustion options, with:

  • Sport – starting from around £70,000 shadowline exterior trim. Harman Kardon surround, heated front seats, 21” alloys, climate comfort windscreen, eDrve exterior sound, flush door handles, ambient lighting, 4-zone air conditioning, split-folding seats, heated washer jets, LED lights, parking assistant, ConnectedPackage Pro, Live Cockpit Professional with head-up display;
  • M Sport – at circa £73,000 upgrade has 21” alloy wheels, M Sport exterior bodystyling, welcome light, polygonal steering wheel and aerodynamic styling; and
  • M 60 (an “M”) – at just over £110,000 this ultimate model adds 22” alloys, front and rear air suspension, M sport brakes, front and rear heated comfort system, front electric seats with massage, front ventilated seats, suit interior design, laserlights and parking assistant pro.

And to make your iX perfect, consider one of the many key packages from BMW like the Sky Lounge Pack (for panoramic sunroof and sun protection class), Technology+ Pack (for Bowers & Wilkins surround sound and the interior camera) or the Comfort Pack (for comfort access, front electric seats with massage and heated steering wheel).

A more expensive comfort+ pack is also available (for comfort access, front/rear heated comfort, soft-close doors and ventilated seats). The laserlights are available as standard on the M60 or can be added to your Sport or M Sport via a visibility pack

But can an individual lease an iX?

While it is not untrue to say that many EVs in the UK are procured via company car and salary sacrifice schemes, many of our personal customers are now leaving their petrol and diesel vehicles and moving into BEVs. With growing fuel costs, higher servicing/maintenance obligations and a growing uncertainty over combustion residual values, moving to an EV makes good financial sense.

Not to mention that they are often quicker and much more fun to drive (but with a social conscience!). And for our business leasing customers, the 2% BiK makes for some very cost-effective company car tax expenditure. Use the car tax calculator on our e-car lease website to find out more.

When you are ready to lease your next BMW iX just select your preferred option / options from our comprehensive list on our best deals section. All of the vehicle contains our “Living with your ...” tools free of charge so you can truly understand whether an EV will work for you or the business.

Make sure you amend the specification on our website to build your perfect car and alter the term, annual mileage and initial rental (deposit) to get a price which meets your budget. How much is a BMW iX Electric to lease?
Ranging between £70,000 – £110,000, the iX is in the luxury car segment, so this is not one of the cheap EVs to lease. For those PCH customers with a bigger deposit or management / director level BCH customers, this could be the ideal vehicle. Expect to pay £750 - £1500 per month on a lease deal, specification / battery / contract dependent

Is a BMW iX Electric a good car to lease?
In 2022, BMW delivered everything they promised, including the iX. And the reviews from automotive publications and press are happy with what they are seeing / driving. Most websites are rating the iX 8 – 9 /10 or 4 – 4.5 / 5, which is reflective of just how quality this car is. For those drivers with a family, or pets, this could be the best large SUV EV to lease.

Is a BMW iX electric lease right for me or the business?
The BMW iX is undoubtedly a great pure emission product to lease. However, suitability on an EV shouldn’t just be about the looks, performance, battery capability or practicality. Moving into the EV lifestyle involves considering the range, charging speeds, your charging infrastructure and charging cables. There are additional obligations for an electric car compared to a combustion equivalent, so we do encourage everyone to use our “Living with your …” tools to ensure this is the right decision

Where do I find the best BMW iX lease deals in the UK?
Some of the best offers our e-car lease team have on the iX can be seen on websites like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. But not everything we have will be found on other websites, so we do ask you to visit our dedicated electric car website. Because of the cost of the iX, it is advisable to test-drive and review the car at your local BMW dealership. If you are comparing lease v buy on this car, ask BMW for a PCP or Hire Purchase quote to review against our contract hire arrangements.

What is the Cheapest BMW iX Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (April 2022), the cheapest model to lease within the BMW iX range is the ESTATE 240kW xDrive40 Sport 77.6kWh 5dr Auto. However, at around £70,000 compared to the £73,000 of the M Sport, it may be more practical to pay a little more.

What is the range of an electric BMW iX?
Because the iX has different platforms available, there is not one figure covering the whole range. In addition, EVs performance differ according to temperature, driving speeds and driver behaviours, so our “Living with your…” tools are so crucial here. For the 40 model, expect colder temperatures to deliver a combined 185 miles (155 miles on motorways and 215 miles in towns/cities) and in warmer temps about 245 miles (200 miles on motorways and 310 miles in towns/cities). The larger battery 50 option, will have cold-weather ranges of a combined 265 miles (225 miles on motorways and 310 miles in towns/cities) and in warmer temps about 355 miles (290 miles on motorways and 445 miles in towns/cities).

Can you tow with a BMW iX?
Yes – a tow hitch is available to purchase on the BMW iX. BMW do have a Towbar as a manufacturer option which costs about £850 plus Vat.

What is the towing capacity of the BMW iX?
The BMW iX has a towing weight (unbraked) of 750kg and a towing weight (braked) of 2500kg making this one of the best EVs for towing a caravan or trailer (boat / jet ski requirements).

What is the MPG of the BMW iX?
The BMW iX electric has a combustion fuel equivalent of 115 mpg
