Leasing a DS3 Crossback E-Tense in the UK

Are DS making electric cars for UK customers? Since 2020 this luxury spin-off from Citroen have been impressing personal and business customers with their small electrified SUV – which they refer to as a Crossback (and which is equally available in petrol and diesel format). Not unlike Citroen, with their comparable e-C4, the Stellantis-owned DS brand are also targeting the SUV segment which seems to be the key battleground for many manufacturers.

And the DS3 Crossback is not without tough competition in the form of the Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro EV and the Peugeot e-2008. With similar looks, specification and battery performance, it’s now actually difficult to select the best option to lease. But DS are confident that their elevated 100% electric DS3 could be a key player in the market.

(note that DS are using “E-Tense” to refer to electrification)

But will DS be offering enough specification choices for our e-car lease customers?  At present (May 2022) there are impressive product choices including:

  • Bastille – at nearly £35,000 this option includes a 7” touchscreen, leather steering wheel, electrically folding door mirrors, air conditioning, keyless start, DS connect box, rear parking sensors, safety pack, halogen headlights, dark tinted rear windows and 17” alloys. Consider adding the integrated navigation for £700, the City Pack at £450 for front parking sensors and a rear-view camera or the £1,200 matrix headlights;
  • Performance Line – equally near £35,000, this model offers 17” alloys, rear parking sensors, 7” touchscreen, halogen lights, safety pack and automatic lights. Consider the £300 HUD, £350 keyless entry and start or the £700 connected nav;
  • Performance Line+ – this upgrade will cost around £38,000 and adds 18” alloys, Connected nav, matrix LED lights, front and rear parking sensors, LED rear lights, front centre armrest and aluminium sports pedals. In terms of options, consider adding the City Pack at £250 for a rear-view camera, the £300 HUD or the £200 charging cable for charging via a 3-pin plug;
  • Rivoli – at just over £39,00 this luxury model offers 18” alloys, colour contrast roof, air conditioning, electrically folding mirrors, keyless entry and start, advanced safety pack, city pack (front parking sensors and reversing camera), matrix LED lights and leather. Consider adding the £300 HUD; and
  • Louvre – just over £41,250 this top of the line EV includes nav, City Pack, matrix LED lights, leather steering wheel, Nappa leather interior, electrically folding mirrors, front and rear interior LED lights, dark tinted rear windows, 18” diamond cut alloys and front centre armrest. Consider adding the £200 aluminium pedals.

With such a generous specification and options selection, the only key question is whether or not the battery in the DS3 Crossback can offer a genuinely positive electric experience? The usable lithium-ion 45 kWh battery offers 100 kW (or 134hp) for 0 – 62 times of 8.7 seconds and top speeds of 93mph.

In terms of the Crossback range, expect combined cold weather ranges of 135 miles and milder weather to allow for 185 miles on a full charge. For charging times, note the 11 kW AC max allowing 5 hour 0 – 100% times with the 101 kW DC enabling 10 – 80% rapid charging in just over 25 minutes. For DS’s first attempt at a pure electric car, these are some robust statistics.

Where the fully electric DS3 is likely to wow is in the personal lease market, where many customers are now making a transition away from combustion options (petrol, diesel and hybrid) and are moving towards the zero-emission alternatives. With the UK government looking to end combustion production in UK around 2030 – 2035, it is crucial that customers begin to adapt.

Many towns and cities are adopting Congestion Zones and Clean Air Zones in an effort to change urban traffic and reduce pollution, with potential charges and penalties coming into force. Growing fuel costs and servicing obligations on the combustion vehicles are making them less desirable; not to mention that EVs are easier to drive and offer quicker 0 – 62 times.

The understanding of Whole of Life costs, which is clear on our “Living with your …” tools, is also interesting for customers who are now appreciating the cost of charging their new EV, the cost per mile and the maintenance provisions available.

How much is a DS3 Crossback e-Tense to lease?
With this crossover ranging between £35,000 - £42,000, this vehicle is not exactly aiming to be the cheapest in the market. Expect monthly rentals on this DS to be around £325 - £450 on a leasing deal, subject to your specification and contract requirements. For those looking to lease a more budget EV, you may need to look to the sister-company Citroen or head to our Peugeot or Vauxhall deals section.

Is a DS3 Crossback e-Tense a good car to lease?
The DS3 has received mixed reviews from the automotive press across the UK; CarWow rate this as 6/10, What Car? at 3/5 and Top Gear at 6/10. The benefit of DS is that they form part of Stellantis, who now own and operate a vast number of leading automotive manufacturers. Economies of scale are of key importance to battery production and tech improvements, so expect the DS to be an important part of the UK’s EV fleet

Is a DS3 Crossback e-Tense lease right for me or the business?
Style, aesthetics and comfort are all nice aspects on a new car. However, we would implore you, or the fleet manager, to make a more formative decision based on the facts that really matter on the e-Tense product. For example, consider seasonal ranges, charging speeds / times, home or workplace charge point infrastructure and charging cost / cost per mile. There’s more to take on board and analyse but using our “Living with your …” tool, all of this is provided to you in a concise and digestible format.

Where do I find the best DS3 Crossback e-Tense lease deals in the UK?
Some customers will begin their journey at the local DS dealership, where they can test-drive and procure a purchase quotation on the new EV. Should you buy or lease the fully-electric DS3? This is very much a subjective decision where there is no right or wrong answer; simply make one based on your needs and requirements. After comparing these PCP or HP quotations against the e-car contract hire offering you may want to utilise aggregation websites such as AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. Or head to review platforms like GreenCarGuide and Fully-Charged for any discount codes.

What is the cheapest DS3 Crossback e-Tense Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing, the cheapest option to select is the ELECTRIC CROSSBACK HATCHBACK 100kW E-TENSE Bastille 50 kWh 5dr Auto. We also suggest you review our dedicated deals section, as we sometimes receive enhanced discount for bulk purchases or additional terms from our select finance company.

What is the range of an Electric DS3 Crossback e-Tense?
An EVs range, on a full charge, is clearly documented on every deal the e-car website offers via the “Living with your …” tools. What customers may notice is that we don’t use one figure to showcase the ability of the vehicle. Because external temperature, driving speeds and driver behaviour all influence the battery performance, we make this abundantly clear. In colder weather, expect 110 miles on a motorway and 160 miles in towns and cities with a full charge. In comparison, warmer temperatures should improve this to 145 miles on the highway and 240 miles in urban conditions

Can you tow with a DS3 Crossback e-Tense?
No - you cannot add a tow hitch and / or tow attachment for this car.

What is the towing capacity of the DS3 Crossback e-Tense?
N/A - you cannot tow a trailer or caravan with this EV.

What is the MPG of the DS3 Crossback e-Tense?
This EV  has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 144 mpg.
