Leasing an EQA in the UK

Not unlike their main competitors, BMW and Audi, the Mercedes engineers had plenty of work to do in order to keep up with some of the latest electric product being produced elsewhere – an almost unknown brand, Tesla, seemingly dethroning many of the German manufacturers with its world-class Model 3. And, not unlike the competition, the Mercedes group seemed somewhat slow to transition to electric, instead electing to prioritise petrol, diesel and plug-in based engine solutions.

However, what may have been reticence (or thorough planning and investment), has now been replaced with enthusiasm. Mercedes now have in place a wide array of electric product, known as their “EQ” brand, which allows a customer looking at SUVs, saloons or people carriers to a have a fully electrified option. Mercedes are set to have the largest selection of electric vehicles for their customers compared to any other manufacturer in the world.

So what is the EQA? This small SUV is effectively a Mercedes GLA but with the subtle addition of lithium-ion batteries as opposed to the petrol or diesel (and plug-in) technology customers have been accustomed to. While not their first zero-emission option to select, the EQA quickly followed the successful and bigger SUV – the EQC. From 2021, UK personal, business and salary sacrifice leasing customers have been enjoying the Mercedes EV technology. But success is no way guaranteed in this segment, with stiff competition from the Audi Q4 e-tron, Skoda Enyaq, VW ID.4 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. The big question is - what small electric SUV should you go for?

What models and specifications are available in the EQA? The brand initially launched the EQA 250 in the following platforms:

• Sport - £45,000+ - 18” alloys, comfort suspension, easy-pack tailgate, front and rear LED lights, mirror package, privacy glass, surround lighting, ambient lighting, heated front seats, active lane assist, navigation, parking pack with rear view camera;
AMG Line - £47,000+ - upgraded 18” alloys, AMG body styling, black grille, multifunction steering wheel, AMG sports steering and AMG floor mats; and the
• AMG Line Premium - £50,000+ - 19” AMG alloy wheels, panoramic glass sunroof, keyless-go package, adaptive sound system and wireless charging.

However, later in 2021 further battery configurations were added in the form of the EQA 300 and 350. In relation to the EQA 250, this is a 66.5 kWh lithium-ion battery with a power output of 140 kW (or 188hp) – this allows for 0-62 times of 8.9 seconds and top speeds of nearly 100mph. The later models increase the battery performance but at the cost of efficiency and range. For example, the EQA 300 offers 168 kW (228hp) and 0-62 times of 7.7 seconds, with the EQA 350 increasing this to 215 kW (292hp) and 0-62 times of 6 seconds. Additionally, if you need the 4Matic technology, then you need to select the 300 or 350. But as you will note from this synopsis, it is not accurate to say that electric SUVs are boring. Indeed, their performance is somewhat better than combustion equivalents!

But can an EQA be an ideal electric car? The key to any electric car goes beyond its badge, the aesthetics or the specification. What’s so crucial to UK EV customers is the battery technology, in terms of range and charging times. The EQA 250 offers our e-car lease customers with cold-weather ranges of 185 miles and some 250 miles in warmer climates (based on a 100% charge). The EQA can charge at a maximum of 11 kW AC for 7 hour 0-100% charging times, with the 112 kW DC paving way for 30 minute 10-80% times. What needs to be made clear to electric car customers, particularly those leasing for the first-time, is that EVs charge at different speeds (shown as AC and DC) and based on charging habits / locations, this should be used to help you reach an informed decision. Just review our unique “Living with ..” tools to make a full assessment on the EQA.

How much is a Mercedes EQA Electric to lease?
Mercedes are a true luxury car producer and their prestige EQA is no different. However, with a wider range of specifications and battery configurations, there are electric vehicles to assist some budgets; from a £45,000 EQA 250 Sport to a £55,000 EQA 350 AMG Line Premium, there may be a perfect lease solution for you or the company. Expect to pay £400 - £700 per month car-dependent.

Is a Mercedes EQA Electric a good car to lease?
With a Mercedes you can be guaranteed that the build-quality, specification and design is first-class. It is very rare to have a disappointed Merc customer, with many becoming lifelong fans. But with EVs it’s not just about the appearance or the quality of the finish. What truly matters is the battery tech which your new car offers, and our e-car lease customers can take confidence in that the EQA has been well received. Mercedes are making their electric technology a priority, with some of their upcoming EQE and EQS products being capable of 350 – 400 mile+ ranges. For the smaller and cheaper options within the brand, this means class-leading performance.

Is a Mercedes EQA electric lease right for me or the business?
The EQA is one of the best-selling EV SUVs for a reason, this is a solid zero-emission product. However, we do ask that customers, decision-makers and fleet managers consider the entire electric proposition before committing to the lease deal. Because of the nature of the finance product, this is a long-term financial commitment for 2 – 4 years, with early termination charges if you want to end the agreement before cessation. Our “Living with …” Lythium tools help clarify charging times, charging speeds, vehicle performance, charge point locations and the Whole of Life costs. The addition of a charge point infrastructure, servicing / maintenance / tyres plus electric car insurance needs to form part of the decision to go electric with your new Mercedes

Where do I find the best Mercedes EQA lease deals in the UK?
Many of the e-car lease Mercedes EQA electric car leasing deals can be selected on our pricing partners platforms like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. But many UK customers are now heading to franchised dealerships and EV pop-up centres to test-drive and experience the benefits of the EV-lifestyle. Customers also may wish to contemplate purchase-based products like HP and PCP on their new EQA (if ownership is key to them).

What is the Cheapest Mercedes EQA Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing, the cheapest EQA to lease is the 250 140 kW Sport 66.5 kWh Auto. However, it would not be true to say that this is a “cheap EV to lease”, so it may be constricted to those PCH customers with a handsome budget or to the BCH and Sal Sac markets. However, do note that the cost price of a car does not always set the monthly price. Leasing is based around residual values, so a higher-specification model may be better priced on a monthly deal if the selected finance company prefers those options.

What is the range of an electric Mercedes EQA?
Range is one of the most dominant questions which take place in an EV sale / leasing conversation. How far the vehicle will travel on a full charge is a key part of a customer’s decision. This is even more important in the case of high-mileage company car customers, who will be using the UK’s motorways and public charging networks. For the EQA a 250 model will perform in colder weather at 215 miles on city-based driving and around 155 miles on the highway. In warmer climates, expect 320 miles for city-driving and around 200 miles on a highway. Outside temperatures, driving speeds and driver behaviours are crucial to range performance. Be careful about relying on just one WLTP figure!

Can you tow with a Mercedes EQA?
Yes - you can purchase trailer coupling with ESP trailer stabilisation for hitching trailers, caravans or bikes. This currently costs around £750.

What is the towing capacity of the Mercedes EQA?
We expect many customers to utilise the bigger battery SUV - the 350 4Matic. This EV has a towing capacity of 750kg (unbraked) and 1800kg (braked).

What is the MPG of the Mercedes EQA?
This has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 134mpg
