Leasing a Renault Zoe in the UK

How long have electric cars been available for?  While many UK customers can be forgiven for thinking that EVs are a relatively new concept or that Tesla invented the electric car, it may surprise some of our e-car lease customers to discover that the Renault Zoe was first introduced around 2009 / 2010, with production made available in 2012 / 2013. So yes, the Renault Zoe is now just over 10 year’s old!

Since launching, the Zoe has been a crucial cheap EV to lease, with many business, local authorities and councils adopting this hatchback within the fleet as part of their decarbonisation strategy. Consistently a popular car, the Zoe was the 8th best-selling BEV in the UK during 2021, with around 5,700 registered.

In an effort to evolve this model, Renault re-branded the Zoe to the “Zoe E-Tech” in 2021, with some subtle upgrades and changes to maintain a competitive market share. No longer are EVs just luxury or performance models; there are an array of good quality small zero-emission options to select such as the Vauxhall Corsa-e, Peugeot e-208, VW Id.3 and Mini electric. For those personal, or business, lease customers with a limited budget (or who need no deposit arrangements), the Zoe could be the ideal solution.

Having launched in 2012 with just a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery config, UK customers will be more than happy to find out that this has more than doubled as of 2022 – the Zoe now uses a 50 kWh setup. For those new to EVs, or leasing one for the first time, just note that kWh (kilowatt hour) is an indication of the storage capacity of the batteries and, in some way, equates to CC on a petrol or diesel car. If comparing like for like models, the bigger kWh will generally suggest this vehicle has both a longer range and higher output (shown in kW).

What options do Renault offer with their E-Tech?  While Covid and microchip issues have brought about a number of changes to product line-ups, with many manufacturers simplifying their options, UK customers can currently enjoy just one option in the form of:

  • GT Line+ - a £30,500 option with 16” alloys, front/rear parking sensors, reversing parking camera, cruise control, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, hands free entry, electrically adjustable and folding mirrors and fog lights.

However, there are still existing Zoe options in supply for UK customers, with two further options available in this format:

  • S Edition - a £29,850 model which offers Bose stereo, automatic wipes and lights, smartphone integration including Apple CarPlay, cruise control, front / rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, lane departure warning, 10” driver display and 16” alloys; and
  • Iconic – a £28,350 model with automatic wipes and lights, hill start assist, smartphone integration including Apple CarPlay, cruise control, rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, LED headlamps, air conditioning and 16” alloys.

But can the Zoe e-tech deliver UK customers an enjoyable electric experience?   In terms of the GT Line+, Renault will be utilising just one battery format to begin with – a 50 kWh 110 kW configuration. To confirm, all electric vehicles are automatic. In terms of performance, the 100 kW equates to 134 hp which means 0 – 62 times of 9.5 seconds and top speeds of 87 mph.

The range on the Zoe should be around 160 miles in colder weather (combined) and 220 miles in warmer climates (combined) on a full charge. But it’s charging times where the Zoe really shines. Unlike many models, Renault’s electric city-car will charge at a 22 kW AC max for 3 hour 0 – 100% charging times. This makes the Zoe one of the fastest AC charging options. In terms of rapid charging, the 46 kW DC max on the Zoe allows for 56 minute 10 – 80% charge times.

But is leasing a Zoe the best way?  Many personal and business customers do have a conundrum with their EVs - should they be buying or leasing it? On the e-car lease website everything you see is a product called contract hire, which is essentially a long-term rental of the Zoe on a fixed term contract (usership style).

The price you pay per month is based on the car, specification, annual mileage, initial rental and maintenance provisions. Depending on what you, or the fleet manager, selects will determine the monthly cost. To be clear, the car will be returned at the end of the contract without any disposal or deprecation concerns. With products like PCP, finance lease and hire purchase, there are different ownership and tax considerations. But these do allow you to enjoy the Zoe beyond the contract end date if that is what you really want.

How much is a Renault Zoe Electric to lease?
Ranging between £28,000 - £31,000, model and specification dependent, the Zoe e-tech will be a great value leasing option for those personal or business customers looking into cheap deals. Expect to pay between £250 - £350 per month with the e-car team. And when conducting a Whole of Life cost analysis, don’t forget to analyse maintenance, servicing and tyre costs (which can be offset with a maintenance package) plus fuel and insurance provisions.

Is a Renault Zoe a good car to lease?
The Zoe is one of the “oldest” electric vehicle platforms, having been in production for over 10 years. This real-world testing means that Renault have used the opportunities to refine, upgrade and amend the vehicle into one of the best electric city-cars to lease. With review websites like CarWow rating it 8/10, What Car? allocating a 4/5 and TopGear at 7/10, it’s fair to say the UK public is somewhat content.

Is a Renault Zoe electric lease right for me or the business?
Many low-mileage PCH customers along with BCH (and salary sacrifice) customers looking for small EVs will ultimately end up driving the Zoe, as this is one of the best options to select. But that does not mean that EVERYONE should have one. At e-car lease our “Living with your…” tools have been designed to provide a true and honest experience of the EV lifestyle. Whether this be battery capabilities, charging times, range, cables or infrastructure, our expert guides and tools help you understand this in detail. Use this free assistance for making sure the product is suitable before committing.

Where do I find the best Renault Zoe lease deals in the UK?
Our leading Zoe deals can be found on price comparison websites like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. However, we don’t always publish every term, mileage and initial rental for our customers to utilise. This is why we do encourage interested EV customers to head to our bespoke electric-only website. And for those looking at buying vs leasing a Zoe, just visit a local Renault garage to test-drive and compare PCP and HP quotations.

What is the Cheapest Renault Zoe Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (April 2022), Renault are only offering one key option to lease – the 100kW GT Line + R135 50kWh Rapid Charge 5dr Auto which is currently priced at £30,500.

What is the range of an electric Renault Zoe?
The range of an EV is often the first, and most important, query raised by a potential customer- particularly ones new to BEVs. What needs to be made clear is that it is not possible to use just one headline range. EVs just do not work like that. With external temperatures, driver style and behaviours, plus driving conditions, all playing a role in this review it is important customers utilise our “Living with your …” tools. The Zoe performs at around 135 miles on the motorway and 190 miles (when city-driving in colder temperatures on a full charge) and 175 miles on the motorway and 290 miles when city-driving in warmer climates.

Can you tow a Renault Zoe?
Unfortunately, you cannot add tow attachments or a tow bar to the small zero-emission Renault.

What is the towing capacity of the Renault Zoe
Not applicable – you cannot tow with the Renault Zoe.

What is the MPG of the Renault Zoe?
The electric Renault Zoe has a combustion fuel equivalent of 148 mpg.
