Leasing an electric Volvo XC40 in the UK

Volvo are one of the leaders in car safety, but do they do electric cars? The originally Swedish brand of car makers has forever been considered the safest and most reliable of vehicles to choose but their reputation for performance, technology and future proposition have perhaps been underrated. With their XC40 / XC60 and XC90 product, the UK public has swarmed across to Volvo, which is now considered on an equal footing with the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

And what has heartened the EV populous is the clear message that the Volvo brand will be going all electric more quickly than most other mainstream producers. And their innovative Polestar off-shoot is just another indication that Volvo are not going to be left behind in the race to have the leading EVs in the market. So, they’re not playing so safe after all …

Volvo’s clear advantage in the UK’s leasing market has been with their SUV product. And our e-car lease customers have waited with bated breath as to whether or not this will include a zero-emission / 0g/km option to select. Around 2020, Volvo tentatively introduced their small SUV option, the XC40 Recharge, to the UK demographic. With some further enhancements and updates, 2021 truly saw this SUV EV emerge as one of the best EVs to lease in the UK. Based on the usual combustion or PHEV XC40, very little has changed for Volvo fans with the exception of some lithium-ion batteries underpinning the car’s abilities.

Apart from the looks and safety, can XC40 provide a great EV option to lease? Since 2022, the brand is now offering two great battery options to consider, with a further option in the brand-new C40 Recharge EV supplementing this. On the XC40 our e-car lease customers can enjoy one of two platforms:

1. A 69 kWh 170 kW option – with a combined range of 165 miles in colder climates and 220 miles in warmer weather on a full charge, this cheaper option still offers 7.4 second 0-62 times and 99 mph top speeds. With charging times of 7 hours from 0 – 100% on the 11 kW AC max and 33 minute 10 - 80% times on a 150 kW DC max, this EV is more than substantial enough for most personal and company car drivers; and

2. A 78 kWh 300 kW option - with a combined range of 180 miles in colder climates and 235 miles in warmer weather on a full charge, this luxury EV option generates 4.9 second 0-62 times and 112 mph top speeds. With charging times of 8 hours from 0 – 100% on the 11 kW AC max and 33 minute 10 - 80% times on a 151 kW DC max, this is a great EV for high-mileage customers.

And in terms of specifications, the XC40 Recharge is available in an array of options including the Core, Plus and Ultimate. And what charging cables does the Volvo electric come with? Customers can benefit from the 4.5m Type 2 / mode 3 charge cable and 7m 10amp Charge Cable with 3 Pin Plug. What this effectively means is that our e-car lease customers have a cable to connect to a household socket / wall plug (which would take 38 hours to fully charge) and a cable for connecting to public charge points on AC format. For rapid charging, you will connect directly to the CCS cable which the rapid charging point will have available.

Will a Volvo XC40 be as fun to drive as a BMW iX3 or Tesla Model Y? With the Geely Group collating a number of products, the move to electrification has been a progressive one but early indications suggest that Volvo and Polestar have created practical and cost-effective EVs, with a healthy selection of single and twin motor options. The UK does enjoy an SUV – in 2021 the PHEV XC40 was the 3rd best selling car with nearly 6,500 registered. And independent automotive review websites are giving this car a positive response. Whether you are a personal, business or salary sacrifice customer, this will be a car you will enjoy.

Should I, or the business, lease the new electric Volvo XC40? What e-car lease fundamentally offer is a product named contract hire (or leasing for short). This is a fixed contract between 2 – 4 years, which you set an annual mileage and initial rental for. This is a usership arrangement which effectively translates into a long-term hire product. You or the company will never own the car and at the end of the contract; the vehicle will simply be collected. While leasing is a tax-efficient product for businesses, and great for company car tax, for personal customers this provides a fixed cost for a set period of time. You are not subject to the uncertainties of the automotive market unlike with cash purchases or hire purchase.

But I’m a high-mileage driver – can I look at the electric Volvo? Some of our 20,000 mile per annum customers can be understandably nervous about using an EV. However, to help anyone on our bespoke e-car website, our “Living with …” tools provide a full analysis of range and battery capabilities based on driving styles, behaviours and climate. And with near 30,000+ devices to connect to, simply integrate the Zap Map app to locate your most convenient public charge point. Just remember to differentiate between slower AC units and the quicker DC rapid charge points.

Ready to lease your new XC40 Recharge? To get an instant personal or business quote, simply select the battery and specification you need (including any additional manufacturer options) and build a contract around your requirements. While the e-car lease website is the leading choice for EV information, you can always call and speak to one of the team here.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Volvo XC40 Electric to lease
Thankfully Volvo have provided two different battery units together with different specifications so there is a good price selection between £43,000 - £58,000. In terms of leasing offers this should equate to rentals of around £350 - £550. While not exactly a cheap lease deal, some of the less expensive vehicles should be equally affordable amongst our personal, business and salary sacrifice customers.

Is a Volvo XC40 Electric a good car to lease?
With Volvo you have a firm commitment from a manufacturer which has an enviable reputation for quality, reliability and safety. Not only that, the group have been investing into electric technology for some time which means e-car lease customers benefit from a positive EV-lifestyle. But with every transaction, we stress that you use our guides and “Living with …”  tools to fully appreciate what to expect with your new electric car. We find that customers leasing an EV for the first time do need that extra guidance; this is why you use our expert team.

Is a Volvo XC40 Electric lease right for me or the business?
While the Volvo XC40 looks and feels exactly like its combustion equivalents, there are additional obligations which come into place on an EV. For example, do you understand charging speeds, charging times, electric car insurance and charge point infrastructure? The e-car lease team will even ask about your domicile – do you have off-street parking for a charge point installation? The reason for more thorough investigation is that using an EV is more onerous compared to a combustion equivalent. That is not to say it is impossible; it is anything but! However, with the proper preparation and education, you, the company car driver or fleet manager can be assured that this is a solution which meets your long term needs and requirements.

Where do I find the best Volvo XC40 Electric lease deals in the UK?
Some of the leading e-car lease deals will feature on our pricing partners platforms like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. That being said, head to your local Volvo retailer to test-drive and compare prices (on a PCP or HP basis). There is no one “best” way to procure an EV. Whether you are looking to buy, lease, subscribe or rent, it’s about finding the best deal for you

What is the Cheapest Volvo XC40 Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing, the cheapest EV within the XC40 range is the 170kW Recharge Core 69kWh 5dr Auto. However, as we have already mentioned this is not a cheap leasing option and customers on a personal, business or salary sacrifice contract do need a budget of £350 per month and above.

What is the range of a Volvo XC40 Electric?
Historically there were far more concerns that an EV range would be insufficient for the daily commutes of most UK drivers. In the last few years many of the innovative battery tech improvements have dispelled this rumour. But even with a new Volvo, the range the vehicle offers on a full charge does need consideration. For example, the 78 kWh 300 kW option could generate anywhere between 150 – 215 miles in colder climates (based on driver style and behaviour) and 185 – 310 miles in warmer climates. Winter weather can impact the battery efficiency together with prolonged higher speeds, which you experience on a motorway. Use our “Living with …” tools to get an honest account of what to expect from your zero-emission SUV.

Can you tow with a Volvo XC40?
Yes - you can purchase a retractable towbar for £1250 from Volvo. By pressing a button in the load compartment this will fold the towbar in and out. This addition also includes trailer stability assist.

What is the towing capacity of the XC40?
We expect many customers to utilise the bigger battery SUV. This EV has a towing capacity of 750kg (unbraked) and 1800kg (braked). Like most Volvo SUV products, this has formidable towing capacity for this segment

What is the MPG of the XC40?
This Single Motor has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 127mpg while the Twin Motor has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 113mpg
