The Mercedes team are in the midst of a major overhaul for all their electric car products. No longer will we see the “EQ” approach, as the German powerhouse looks to synergise their combustion and electric products within the same branding.

In the last few months we have already witnessed the new electric C-Class, Electric GLC and the GLB 7-seater, so the latest initiative is by no means surprising. One of Merc’s most-popular vehicle options, the GLA, has been remodelled and will now be available in both combustion and all-electric format.
This means the existing EQA is no more. While a good move to bring the options within one established brand, and known quantity, the success of the Mercedes electric car offering will be contingent on more than just the aesthetics and the battery.
The cost of charging in the public network is something which could very much help the transition for UK customers into EVs according to YouGov. In a poll of 2,130 people, the proportion of recipients went from 25% to 37% in terms of who would buy an EV if public charging was made cheaper than petrol.
With the Government target of 33% for zero-emission in 2026 and 38% in 2027, the ChargeUK group are petitioning for changes in the public charging network.

For any EV drivers without a home charge point, like a flat or terraced property, or for those who need to charge regularly on the public network due to mileage, the reality is a far more expensive experience. Part of this is exacerbated via the VAT on public charging which is currently set at 20%, while the home charging is now going from 5% to 0% under Andy Burnham’s new ruling.
With the cost of electricity fundamental to working out the running costs and Whole of Life costs on your vehicle, there are big questions surrounding the fairness and efficacy of the current system.
With public charging on a DC network for a rapid experience coming in at around 79 pence per kWh, this is a seismic difference to the near 25 pence per kWh standing tariff at home or the overnight tariffs of 8 -10 pence per kWh. If the government can act to address the cost and bring this down to a fairer charge, EVs like the GLA could be incredibly successful.
The new all-electric GLA is described as “the space where something new begins” the new small SUV will bring a bold design, confidence and the everyday practicality a family needs. With a sporty and refined exterior, the GLA has been redesigned to look like everything you would expect a Mercedes to be.

The interior is focused on refinement and technology, with the new era of digitisation afoot. As an EV, the Mercedes team have utilised the battery improvements from their latest C-Class and GLC into the GLA to offer some impressive range and charging capabilities.

Key colours include alpine grey, Patagonia red, cosmos black, sapphire blue, high-tech silver, aqua mint and night black. Consider key options like the trailer coupling with ESP trailer stabilisation, full leather and the flexible DC current system (this allows 400V charging as well as 800V charging).
