Yesterday was a big one for anyone in the West Midlands, with the region’s mayor announcing that a commitment to 10,000 charging points has been made to ensure that local residents have access to facilities to charge their EV.
While many drivers are enjoying domestic infrastructure, which essentially means they charge at home, there are others who do not always have this resource. It is this next tranche of customers which we in the EV sector really want to target within the green transition.
In an article from the BBC which recognises that the West Midlands is the “heart of the UK car industry”, the local constituents of areas like Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Coventry are going to be able to access significant improvements in public charging, with the next 4 years likely to see a massive propulsion in facilities.
The charging infrastructure is likely to be mixed, with at least 9 ultra-fast stations offering nearly 200 individual points for local drivers to quickly top-up their vehicles. In addition, more charging facilities will be offered for those residents who lack an off-road charging location, so they can more easily fuel their new or used EV.
The Government are driving this via their Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) funding scheme, which is centred on improving the resources in each council across the UK. This isn’t just about cars; taxis, commercial vehicles and even buses are transferring to battery technology as the UK pushes to more Net Zero ambitions.
The statistics from Zap Map are incredibly heartening on this monumental topic with some key improvements including:
The key takeaway for the UK is that more expedient charging options are being installed. With modern EVs now improving due to battery RnD like solid-state batteries and the BYD Blade technology, many vehicles can charge beyond 200kW DC.
In practice, this means more chances of 15-20 minute charging sessions (battery dependent) for UK drivers which is essentially allowing for more parity with the petrol station experience. As reported by our Zap Map partners, the charge points with a power rating of 50kW - 149kW have increased by 286 additions in the past three months, bringing the total number to 7,736. For ultra-rapid devices (150kW+) these have increased by almost 66% to a total of 7,726. Overall, ultra-rapid options make up 22% of all installations in 2025.
Talking of rapid charging, the new Ioniq 9 leasing deal has just gone live with the e-car team . This is one of only a few 7-seater cars which are charging at a rapid rate in 2025! Check our definitive list below:
