Porsche have truly thrown a cat amongst the pigeons this week by confirming that their Inductive Technology is going to be rolled out on their new Porsche Cayenne Electric SUV and Coupe.

As noted in the latest Porsche electric car news , the Cayenne EV will be adding colour choices, electrically operated doors and also, inductive charging. The Porsche Wireless Charging system is the first of a kind in our market, as this essentially means that you no longer need to connect your vehicle to the charge point via a cable.

Using a dedicated Ground Pad (which needs to be formally installed), you simply drive over the plate and the charging session will commence. If you are interested, then you need to be aware of 3 key components including:

•  Preparation hardware on the vehicle itself;
•  A dedicated vehicle pad (on the car); and
•  A Ground Pad installed at your home or business premises.

The technology means that your Cayenne can essentially charge up to 11kW AC wirelessly (at about a 90% efficiency rate). The “Ground Pad” is connected to the internet via LTE or Wi-Fi and this allows access to a range of digital services and updates.

This ensures the Ground Pad will work seamlessly with the My Porsche app, which controls your vehicle and it’s charging status. Your Cayenne, using Park Assist, can help you to position the vehicle as you drive over the Ground Pad to ensure this is a convenient process.

As the Ground Pad is well engineered, you can drive over it with your tyres and it will withstand the vehicle weight with ease. With motion detection / foreign object detection, if the plate heats up or detects something is amiss, it does have the ability to switch off for safety.

If you do want to add a wireless charging experience to your new Porsche Cayenne electric you need to select on your build – 1) the Porsche Wireless Charging – Vehicle Pad (£1,322); and 2) the Porsche Wireless Charging – Ground Pad (£5,355).

For any other vehicle on the UK road, you will not be able to benefit from this level of technology and convenience just yet.

Instead, you need a charging cable and a charge point. However, don’t worry, the process is not a difficult one. Using our amazing Ioniq 6 N  performance car as an example, this is described on the manufacturer website as “built to go the distance with less pit stops”. But when you do need to pit stop, is this BEV making the driver’s life a comfortable one?

When you appraise the charging qualities of the EV you need, it is important to separate it into two key categories:

1.  AC – the Alternating Current, or AC, is the slower charging statistics highlighted on every vehicle. This is not relevant when you see Hyundai headlines like “ultra-fast charging capability” as this will be covered below. Your AC is essentially the type of charge points and charging sessions you incur at home or at work premises via plug sockets and dedicated charging sessions. Often between 2.3kW (wall plug) to 7.4kW (domestic charge point), these are longer and more overnight charging sessions. If you do use an overnight dedicated charging tariff, these are cheap and convenient too as well as being more battery friendly when you consider elements like degradation. For an Ioniq 6 N the wall plug would take around 41 hours for 0 -100% compared to the 13 hours on the standard wallbox. However, as the EV does have 11kW AC available, if you are charging at work or another commercial premises you can sometimes access “3-phase”, which means that the 0 – 100% charging session would take around 9 hours. To work this out it is actually simple, just take the usable battery size (which is 80kWh) and divide by the charging speed (shown as kW);  

1. DC – the Direct Current, or DC, is the rapid session and, in this example, would be where the Hyundai manufacturer website refers to “ultra-fast charging capability” and a “technological milestone”. Rapid charging stations are those located at service stations and dedicated forecourts across the UK. You don’t need your own cable, as these will be fixed to the charging point itself. Every EV will have a different maximum capacity for rapid charging (shown as DC) in the same way that every charge point has different outputs. This is why we encourage all our customers to go onto Zap Map (https://www.zapmap.com/) so that they connect to the best charging solution; not just the closest by geographical location. Looking at the Hyundai, with an 800V architecture, this has ultra-rapid capabilities which means that the newer 350kW DC chargers would be accessible. When you take the Ioniq 6 N as an example you could use the 50kW DC connections for a 10 – 80% session in 71 minutes, a 150kW DC charger for a 25 minute 10 – 80% session or the 350kW DC ultra-rapid could offer an 18-minute experience. Quick and convenient when you know how!

  How does the Ioniq 6N perform?

The AWD saloon option will have an 80kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.2 seconds, 162 mph top speeds and 478 kW (or 641hp) – this is a total torque of 568 lb-ft. Expect a cold weather range of around 225 miles with warmer weather allowing for 305 miles – a combined range of around 270 miles on a full charge.

On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 45 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 263 kW DC maximum allowing 17 minute 10 – 80% times. This has a fuel equivalent of 137 mpg. A cargo volume of 371L is available with this car. This will have Bidirectional charging capabilities via the V2L on an exterior and interior outlet. The heat pump is standard.
