In an era when Chinese-built EVs are getting so much attention, it would be remiss to turn your back on some of the most influential and fastidious car brands like Mercedes. No car producer is immune from the press and online reviews either.
Only today, we have seen the impact of a fatal crash on the Xiaomi car maker. With images and videos purporting to show the car on fire, queries were raised about the safety and fragility of the vehicle’s robustness and efficacy.
As a result, ongoing critique has seen the share prices for the vehicle drop quite significantly, with an 8.7% decrease on the Hong Kong stock exchange.
While we pass no judgment on the quality or reliability of the Xiaomi brand, it is a useful reminder of the pressures and watchful eye on the BEV market as a whole. Without a doubt, this technology is being scrutinised to a higher degree than any combustion option.

This is perhaps more prevalent in cases of foreign brands, which we have seen arriving in swathes on the UK shores. For more traditional and luxury car makers, like Mercedes, events like this do present an opportunity for the group to harness their more unquestionable reputation.

This may part-explain why the Mercedes G Class Electric is now becoming an off-road luxury icon.
The G class needs no introduction in the combustion world. The “daily” favourite for many celebrities, footballers and wealthy entrepreneurs, the G wagon is a status symbol for elite comfort. When the Merc team announced a BEV equivalent many fans of the product asked the big question - Why? For retail and consumer customers there is no overriding tax reason to move into zero-emission technology.
While we do propagate the messages about greener driving, the environment, cheaper charging costs (compared to petrol or diesel) not all personal leasing customers are on board with this. However, this is in stark contrast to a limited company in the UK, which enjoys some immense benefits of battery propelled vehicles. So much so, that more business owners and directors are moving into luxury and performance EVs for 2025 / 2026.
When you analyse the financial underpinning of the decision, it isn’t difficult to see why the immensely attractive G class EQ technology SUV is popular. When you operate a limited company, the rate of Corporation Tax is 25%, so you do need to carefully manage your income and expenditure as part of tax efficiency.
With a Ltd company you can reclaim 100% of the monthly rental against tax in the case of a 0g/km (zero-emission) vehicle. For VAT registered companies, you can also reclaim 50% of the Vat on the finance and 100% of the VAT on the maintenance / servicing payments too.

For any companies buying their EV (Hire Purchase or Contract Purchase too) you can offset 100% of the vehicle cost in year 1. While these are tremendous benefits, the big win for the individual is with the Benefit-In-Kind (BiK) position. The reason that so many wealthy directors and business owners have been leasing cars personally, is that petrol or diesel cars procured via the company incur massive income tax bills under BiK rules.
The more polluting a vehicle is, and the more expensive the price is, the more tax you pay. In some cases, the income tax exposure is more than the actual vehicle rentals! However, for a pure electric vehicle there is a more passive approach, with only a small BiK exposure on a vehicle emitting 0g/km.
To illustrate this more directly, you would pay around £150 per month BiK as a 40% taxpayer on a G580 EQ tech. When you compare that to the G63, you would be looking at ten times that amount!

The benefit of going electric can extend beyond this too. When you utilise electricity rather than petrol/diesel, there are some additional tax savings allowable. With a combustion car you incur the private fuel for company car tax which is now a sizeable obligation. For an EV, you can simply install a dedicated charger at your office / business premises, and offset this amount against tax under capital allowances (it is Full Expensing).
As electricity is not classed as a fuel, you can charge your EV at the office without any personal income tax exposure and offset the cost of electricity from your tax bill. While even the most hardline petrol fan would argue against a BEV, your accountant or financial director / advisor will not.
The all-electric G-Class is described as “Timeless design, now electrified” and promises to offer an iconic approach coupled with a revolutionary performance. The Gelandewagen has been crafted with precision and style, offering a spacious and premium cabin bolstered with genuine off-road performance (including G-Turn and steering for precise turns).

Key highlights of the vehicle are dark tinted heat glass, privacy glass, AMG floor mats, wireless charging, 360 degree camera, active parking assist, MBUX augmented reality, navigation, smartphone integration, MBUX multimedia system, Burmester sound, electrically adjustable/heated/dimming mirrors, adaptive highbeam assist, 3-zone climate control, stowage space pack, heated front and rear seats, memory function for front seats, keyless go, Guard and 360 vehicle protection.
