Many luxury and sports performance electric car manufacturers will be making some considerable inhales when they notice the recent release (May 2026) by Mercedes.
The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 door Coupe is something to behold, as we will cover below, pushing the boundaries of performance, vehicle range and charging experience. It is the latter which are easy to forget when UK leasing customers are appraising which vehicle to procure next.

While aesthetics, build quality and technology remain largely important to British drivers, we cannot ignore that battery capability and infrastructure are still objective metrics in the acquisition. Even in 2026, when confidence and support behind the BEV is at an all-time high, the analysis underpinning the buying decision remains as equally important now as it did in 2020 when mass-adoption began.
The new GT Coupe EV is a prime example of the future of our vehicles, with its charging abilities demonstrating the direction of where our vehicles are going. With a charge power maximum of 600kW DC, Mercedes have created the most powerful charging capability in an EV to date.
To put this in perspective, using our e-car lease guide to EVs , the maximum capabilities of our vehicles so far have been circa 400kW DC. The average rapid charge (DC) ability on the e-car lease website is 192kW DC. So, to have a vehicle with the ability to operate at 600kW is truly outstanding. But why is this so important?

One of the main issues stopping many UK drivers move into an EV is that there are concerns that for those unable to charge at home or who are covering higher-mileage, the time for charging their vehicle makes the process unworkable.
In particular, there was anxiety that drivers would be left for 30 mins – 1 hour in some rainy and cold service station! While some of our earlier innovations lacked the real capacity to be truly called “rapid” the evolution of charging is something that car and battery manufacturers can be proud of.
With the upcoming GT EV from Mercedes, some of the charging times are more in-line with a petrol station experience.

However, this is subject always to the charging facility you are using. Just to be clear, every DC point throughout the UK will offer a different charging speed according to the electrical capability and the operator installing it. Using a service like Zap Map helps a BEV driver to understand this before arriving at the charging station. You will find in the UK that many rapid (50kW+) and Ultra-Rapid (150kW+) do have varying speeds, and costs, which is why understanding the ability of your vehicle and the charging solution is so integral. Taking the AMG GT EV, see the 10-80% time below:

But, as a show of honesty, it is important to recognise that many charging solutions are not capable of 350kW DC or more just yet. What might be considered as Ultra-Ultra Rapid (or similar), is still a growing phenomenon. So far this year, 1,410 150kW DC+ solutions have been installed in the UK, taking their number to just under 13,500 by April 2026.
This is why the push from energy companies and charging operators is so fastidious with the regulators and Government, as there is an understanding that this is something which needs to be addressed to ensure a positive experience for UK new and used EV drivers.
