What EVs will we be driving in 2030? The future of our EV choices stands in the balance in 2026, with Chinese products now under pressure from the Government as it considers the imposition of tariffs and charges.
Unlike the rest of Europe, the UK has been somewhat kind and receptive, with lower tariffs allowing some amazing new products like Jaecoo, Omoda, BYD, Xpeng and MG allowed to engage with the British public. However, this has not been without consequence, with other brands in the UK now losing their rapport and connection with their buyers.

With many of these products built in Europe, this has ultimately caused some friction between the UK and its European partners. Even more so when established and prestigious groups like BMW, Audi and Mercedes have experienced kickback against their zero-emission product. This could all change with the UK now looking into a more punitive tariff system in the UK for Chinese automotive options.
As reported in The Telegraph, the brands who could be impacted by this political / economic tool could be passing some costs across to the customer. If the 45% tariffs are utilised, the MD of MG Motors have suggested that the UK will have to incur seismic changes, with price rises, inflation and interest rate increases to follow. But with UK production and manufacturing increasing, the ability to sell goods in the EU will be contingent on our approach to how we receive Chinese vehicles.
A stricter approach to the Chinese EVs may prove to be more beneficial to brands like BMW, who are launching yet another incredible SUV to the market in the form of the iX4 Coupe. With the brand now at the Neue Klasse era, a significant shift in demand and success has arisen.

For prestige and luxury brands, the ability to compete with China has been somewhat difficult when these are significantly cheaper. Price parity through tariffs could present an ability for BMW to more fairly compete, rather than to utilise harsher pricing action and strong discounts to move product. But is the UK charging infrastructure ready for this?
Our partners over at Zapmap produce a monthly report to showcase the ongoing investment and development within the charging network. For September 2026, the key metrics to takeaway are:

With another positive month for charge point installations, you can see that the UK is still a hotbed of investment for charge points. We are only just getting going, with many new options to arrive in the UK like the BYD ultra-fast “Flash-Charging” hubs set to go live.
This is about giving British drivers a presence, and confidence, of charging infrastructure for their needs. While many of us do charge at home, for the price and convenience, having robust charging options on the roads is essential. This is especially so when new EVs like the BMW iX4 are arriving with some incredible technology when it comes to charging speeds.

The “strikingly vibrant” BMW iX4 arrives in the UK with style and confidence. As you can read on the BMW website the new iX4 is an elegant coupe profile to supplement the popular iX3, with a precise sportiness and a strong presence.
The iX4 will combine distinctive proportions to deliver an aerodynamically optimised form. With the standard full-length Panoramic Glass Sunroof along with the Climate Comfort Glass, the interior is awash with sunlight and spaciousness. With electric motors and the all-wheel drive system, the drivetrain and dynamics are allowing drivers to enjoy precision control and immediate response. Incredible 0 – 60 performances, along with high-power charging and a host of driver intelligence systems makes for the perfect EV journey.

The BMW team will continue with their driver-focused interiors which includes the digital displays, BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW Operating System X and a host of controls, navigation and entertainment functions. Characterful front, light and spacious rear plus the dynamics and intuitive connectivity – what’s not to love with this new BEV?
