Northern Ireland has become a hotbed for electric car conversations further to a charging policy at Stormont (the Parliamentary Buildings). As we previously mentioned in an article relating to used EVs and NI, the civil servants at Stormont have been enjoying the gratuity of free charging.
While this is only a modest benefit financially, for those serving in a public office it has been deemed a benefit too far. Reporting again in the BBC there are now more people speaking out on this matter, suggesting that civil servants should pay for the electricity used on their electric cars.
The 6 charging points have historically been utilised without payment but further to an investigation, it was discovered that a travel allowance was allowed to staff who were also being allowed to charge their vehicles for free. Until finer details have been arranged, the 6 EV charging points remain out of use and members who have previously utilised them will be asked to reimburse the public for the electricity used.
So, what started as a fairly innocuous story and insight has become something of great significance and demonstrates why charging policies for both public and private institutions need to be handled carefully! Just because it is BEV related does not mean you do not need to be accountable.

This follows nicely into our regular review and update into the state of public charging for UK EV drivers, as provided by our partners ZapMap . In their June 2026 report, the Zap Map team produced some more results on the recent developments for charging infrastructure in May 2026:
The big growth is really in the rapid charging solutions which are emerging across the UK. As noted in the Zap Map report, they only account for around 25% of total EV chargers in the UK but this is changing.
More and more companies are turning towards interim and efficient DC connection to allow EV drivers to quickly charge their vehicle. One of the stories covered in the GB News Channel is the confirmation of the BYD Flash charging device which can offer seismic charging rates of up to 1000kW.

With BYD Blade batteries able to connect to these points, this would mean 5 – 10 minute charging sessions akin to the time taken at our traditional petrol stations. With rising improvements in battery tech, many of the EVs to lease in 2026 are allowing for DC rates at over 200kW, which essentially means the adage of “5 – 10 minutes” for charging is becoming more of a reality rather than a marketing statement.
If you use our Guide to Electric Cars you will see that the average DC is 193kW across the board. The challenge, which is being addressed, is having a network which can accommodate this level of functionality and provide UK drivers with the ultimate in zero-emission efficiency.
The latest Volvo SUV to go live in showrooms across the UK, the EX60, is exactly the type of next-generation tech we are talking about in terms of charging. With up to 375kW DC, this is exactly the high speed ultra-rapid (or ultra ultra-rapid) facility we are referring to.
One Car, two expressions, the new EX60 and EX60 Cross Country are looking to bring long-range, rapid charging, practicality and robustness to the UK leasing market.
Some of the key features include the 800V charging technology, HuginCore system for OTA updates and AI assistance, 1,647 litres of cargo space across the front, rear and underfloor though modular design, next generation safety design like the multi-adaptive safety belt and Pilot Assist. The Cross Country will offer higher ground clearance along with air suspension as standard.
