The new VW range-topping option and Why Surgeons with a limited company are still enjoying business electric car leasing

As we start the week in the UK leasing market (14 September 2026) we have been met with more positive headlines about the state of the products due to arrive with us over the coming years.

The VW Group, who were in the headlines for job restructuring and labour re-allocation last week, have returned to the forefront of the automotive press with another new update. Their “Mission Efficiency”, a prototype (but near production model) electric vehicle has been tested and recorded some interesting results. The world’s most efficient EV recorded:

  •  Record breaking aerodynamics – Cd of 0.158 (Cd is the Drag Coefficient and is a dimensionless number that measures an object's aerodynamic or hydrodynamic efficiency relative to its shape and frontal area)
  •  Record breaking consumption - 6.89 kWh/100 km (this measures how many kilowatt-hours of electricity an electric vehicle uses to travel 100 kilometres)

  • Pioneering solar technology – a game-changing roof supports the vehicle’s on-board electrical system and rim deflectors perfect flow characteristic
  •  Usable production technology – the Mission Efficiency is based on MEB+ technology which is being used on the new ID. Polo and ID. Cross

What VW are bringing to the market cannot be understated, especially when you may have seen a swathe of headlines documenting the group’s concerns and failures.

This has been more poignant considering the growth and success of new Chinese entrants like Omoda, Jaecoo, Geely, Xpeng and Aion. However, the new direction for the VW Group, which includes Volkswagen, Cupra, Skoda, Porsche and Audi, is one of focus and reconnection to the UK customers who adore their product.

On the whole, this is still the pound for pound best manufacturing group for personal and business leasing customers alike, with a foot in all segments and classes. The realisation is that with BEV technology, there is an added pressure when it comes to battery efficiency, range and charging times, which simply was not a consideration when customers were comparing combustion options.

VW Electric Car Lease News

The recent tests documented a consumption test drive of 1,278km from Germany to the Czech Republic (via Poland). With the 54.9kWh battery, this is not a vehicle based on unaffordable or unusable technologies. This is an option based on a real example and which the VW team (under Thomas Schafer) believes is “technologies for the masses – not just for the few.”

When you consider that the VW group are bringing more accessible and affordable zero-emission solutions in the form of the ID.Polo hatch and the ID.Cross small SUV, the MEB+ front wheel drive platform is not something which our British consumers will be unable to purchase.

With tricky, but perfectly adoptable, technologies like the solar cells in the roof and rear window, we have clear evidence that the future of green technologies is one of innovation and improvements. For more information head to VW Newsroom

This means for those UK surgeons, with their own limited companies, that the electric car lease (or purchase) route is not only the most tax efficient route but it also offers a more pleasurable and functional motoring journey. Healthcare professionals and clinicians who are working outside of the NHS salaried roles will often consider their tax position and liabilities.

In the UK you can elect to be a sole trader or partnership, which means you are subjected to the UK Income Tax rates. For the first £12,570 there is a tax-free personal allowance, but this is adjusted if you earn more than £100,000. Effectively, your personal allowance will reduce by £1 for every £2 beyond your £100,00 earnings (i.e. your personal allowance is £0 once you earn £125,140 or more).

You also have to consider that the higher rate of tax (40%) starts when you earn £50,271 (or more). This becomes 45% when you hit £125,140. Ouch !

So as a result, many surgeons, operators or medical specialists in this field will instead utilise the benefits of a limited company to carry our their practice. With the lower rate of Corporation Tax plus the flexibilities of salary and dividends, this can create a much more tax efficient structure for wealth building.

For your vehicles, cars and vans, this presents another opportunity in which to minimise your outgoings. Rather than run a personal lease or personal contract purchase, a surgeon can instead use their limited company to lease or buy an electric car(s). The advantages are numerous:

  •  You are using money BEFORE any corporation tax or personal tax to pay for the vehicle
  •  The rental can be offset against Corporation Tax in full (as it is 0g/km)
  •  50% of the VAT on the finance can be reclaimed and 100% of the VAT on the maintenance can be reclaimed if your company is VAT registered
  •  BiK is so low that the income tax impact on the director(s) is negligible. Even in the case of luxury cars like Audi, Porsche and Range Rover
  •  Electricity is not classed as fuel by HMRC, so the business can pay for all the charging (which is tax deductible) without any impact on the income tax of the directors
  •  A charge point installed at the business premises is tax deductible as Full Expensing under Capital Allowances

  •  The lease is in the company name, not the surgeon, so this does not impact any personal credit lines
  •  If you buy a new electric car, you can write-down the full amount in year 1

While there are some subtle changes to the BiK rates and eVED, HMRC are still supporting the business contract hire route for EVs which means this continues to be a preferential direction for esteemed medical professionals
