Access to electric cars for “all” is becoming a key agenda of the current Government. Company car and salary sacrifice drivers are mainly making the decision as this makes complete financial sense to them and the business / employer to do so.

For bigger businesses, having the infrastructure at their premises for certain employees makes the transition into BEV technology a more seamless one. The reality for consumers and retail customers is that the move into battery technology is less obvious for many UK drivers, especially when the price of EVs and home charging infrastructure has muddied the waters.

However, with Auto Trader noting that EVs and petrol cars are now at price parity and with ongoing global turmoil disrupting petrol and diesel prices, the logic behind the electric dream is being realised. Yet for those in terraced properties, flats and rental accommodation, there are still some restrictions which are preventing this from happening seamlessly.
As a result, the UK Government are now trying to address these issues, announcing their intention to take “Decisive action to break influence of gas on electricity prices”. As noted in their EV segment, there are plans to make it easier for EVs and solar to be accessible for renters, flat-dwellers and those without a driveway access these benefits.

The Government are looking to push a summer legislative power to allow permitted development rights on EV charging, including cross pavement charging solutions and associated charge points. The “Ability to Charge” is a consultation which will look at ways in which new buildings boost new EV charging provisions or ways to allow renters and leaseholders greater access to charging by making these requests far simpler and accessible.
At present, the method of running a gully under the pavement into the household is a time consuming and expensive process, which can cost the parties hundreds to thousands of pounds to organise. Bear in mind that many residents in these living circumstances are already restricted on budgets, so the move into a BEV is one based on cost-savings and financial preservation.

If we are to help UK customers access EVs with amazing cost-saving and range boosting functionality, then further action is needed from the Government.
