The all-new BMW iX SUV electric car lease - Your Definitive Guide
The Government, via HMRC and the DVLA, are seemingly giving with one hand and taking away with the other when it comes to electric transport. Each day brings new challenges and conundrums, as our motoring economy becomes more and more familiar with the usefulness for new and used EVs.
One of the contentious changes for 2025 is how the DVLA will be approaching vehicle tax / road fund licence for the zero-emission transport. As per their recent Tweet the body are pushing the message to personal and business drivers to be aware of the impending developments.
Whether you operate a zero-emission car, van or motorcycle, you need to pay vehicle tax in the same way as a petrol or diesel vehicle customer. The new measure, which effectively removes band A under our VED system, has now ended the benefit of zero-emission vehicles being free.
For a zero-emission car registered on or after 1 April 2025, all drivers will have to pay the lowest first year rate of tax - £10. For the second tax payment (and beyond) you will have to pay the standard rate of £195. For those EVs registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025, drivers will pay the standard rate of £195. For those EVs registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017, a charge of £20 will apply.
Hybrids, PHEVs and any other alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) will lose the £10 annual discount too. For more expensive electric vehicles, the additional rate (Expensive Car Supplement) will apply. This means that vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2024 with a list price exceeding £40,000 will attract the expensive car supplement for 5 years beginning at the start of the second licence period.
This is currently an additional £410 on top of the VED. While £40,000 may seem like a lot of money for a car, in the world of EVs this encompasses a whole host of options! Not just truly luxury SUVs and 4x4s like the BMW iX featured in this guide.
“Expressive and electric” says the BMW website, the updated iX is aiming to build upon the German’s presence in the BEV market. Having launched into production in mid-2021, the bigger crossover SUV has been a mainstay for many leasing customers, with bigger family cars less popular at the time of inception.
Effectively an electric equivalent of the X5, the iX first came into fruition around 2020 with the group confirming its production in late 2020. From 2021 through to late 2024, the iX proved to be incredibly popular with the xDrive40 featuring more heavily in many fleet and salary sacrifice schemes. The more robust, and exciting, xDrive50 and M60 were nevertheless incredible propositions.
The battery options, which we will discuss below, are aiming to bring greater range and charging times (plus a few nice features via the My BMW App for optimum charging experiences). The EV has received some distinctive aesthetic, and technological changes, with more monolithic and clear lines being used.
A new design of the illuminated BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow and vertical daytime running lights will feature. Bigger wheels are available in 23” form as well as the functional 2.5 tonnes of towing capacity. The group will adopt their minimalist interior design, which focus more on removing distractions and encouraging an ergonomic experience, with a spacious and clear interior.
The optional Sky Lounge pack allows for a quick open panoramic glass sunroof. The BMW Curved Display is angled towards the driver for ease of view, with the HUD is subtly concealed. However, don’t expect the driving experience to falter, with the optimum suspension and low centre of gravity focusing on more driver feedback.
Adaptive 2-axle suspension allows for automated chassis control while the Integral Active Steering provides the ability for your rear wheels to steer too. With some powerful motors, performance and speed are not lacking on any derivative.
As at February 2025 you can choose from:
Key colours include Alpine White (solid) and metallic paint like the Mineral White, Dune grey, Carbon black, Arctic Race Blue, Tanzanite blue and Storm Grey. Inside you can choose between black / atlas grey M sport interior, Castanea Interior Design Suite and the Amido Interior Design Suite. A whole host of 21”, 22” and 23” alloys can be utilised too.
Additional packages like the Technology Pack (for AC charging professional, driving assistant professional and parking assistant pro), M Sport Pro Pack (for brake callipers in red, darkened rear lights, M Lights Shadowline and 22” alloys) and the Comfort Pack (for climate comfort windscreen, front active seat ventilation and heat comfort pack) are available to perfect your EV experience. The electrically foldable towbar can be added at factory and this allows for 2500kg of braked towing or 750kg unbraked.
