Much of the electric car news hubs have been concentrating on the growth of more unfamiliar brands across the UK and European automotive networks. By this we are referring to the newer American and Chinese brands which have quickly propelled into the markets, especially when it comes to pure electric vehicle technology.
Indeed, there were submissions that some of our favourite prestige options - Audi, BMW and Mercedes - may soon be facing immense pressure as they are seemingly falling behind in the race for the BEV dominance.
With factors like vehicle autonomy, battery efficiency, battery range and charging speeds now as equally as important as the aesthetics and brand, there are obvious concerns. However, with increased competition and quality, there is an opposing argument that this is a benefit to the German brands.
These new entrants are setting new standards which will ensure that not only do they have to remain humble but have to make further investment into the core qualities of what makes an electric car fundamentally reliable and beneficial to personal / business leasing customers.
This is probably no more evident in the case of one of the best-looking SUVs to date in the form of the all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC.
In effect, Mercedes launched a derivative of this option in 2019 - 2020 when the EQC was originated. This crossover SUV was Mercedes first real push into the zero-emission market and while it proved to be incredibly popular, some of the underlying battery facets and operations were perhaps less robust.
When Tesla launched their Model 3 and Y Long Range and then Porsche with their Taycan, the range and charging times within the EQC became elementary. While the EQE and EQS landed with the underlying EV architecture which makes them practical, they lacked the truly iconic finish of what we know Mercedes to be. However, in September 2025, this has more than been addressed.
The new Mercedes GLC with EQ technology represents a return to the past for styling and detail but with the underpinning of battery technology which delivers. Described as a car “igniting the future of driving” the new luxury 4x4 will feature an 800V ultra-fast battery, long range driving acumen and a whole host of bold finishes.
First and foremost, this looks just like the GLC which the UK customers have been enjoying over the years, with a modern twist. Self-described as a progressive design with a seamlessly intuitive user experience and cutting-edge design, the car will feature the signature heritage grille and distinct 21” alloys.
Inside, the GLC provides for spacious and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with features like the Sky Control Panoramic Roof and the MBUX Hyperscreen. With a start to finish architecture for an electric car, mobility and efficiency are the prime focus.
On the exterior the key features include the illuminated front design with the iconic grille and Mercedes star, the muscular side and shoulder line are complemented with the stainless steel running onboards (optional).
Towbar preparation means that the fully electric towbar with trailer hitch and ESP is easy to add along with other highlights like the signature star lighting, 21” AMY Y-spoke light alloy wheels and the 128 litre front storage. Inside, the team have built a cabin which has a “welcome home” feel with comfort, aesthetics and intuition.
This is delivered via the MBUX Hyperscreen which is the 39.1” HD experience screen, a Sky Control configurable panoramic roof, active ambient lighting with sound visualisation, comfort seats which can be upgraded to sports seats, massage lumbar support, ventilation, memory function and premium surround sound. Other interior features include the vegan interior pack, wireless charging for mobile devices and an enjoyable 570 litres of boot space (or 1740 with the seats down).
Technology / innovation are correct and present with the new GLC EV. This is aimed to provide the highest standards of user experience, intelligent tech and seamless functionality throughout.
The MBOS, an operating system, is a cloud tech to connect the vehicle, user and associated technologies to create a symbiotic relationship. The MB Drive includes distance assist, 8-cameras, 5 radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a series of OTA updates for keeping you abridge of any developments. The GLC will have an SAE Level 2 system.
The refinement package includes airmatic air suspension and rear-axle steering for enhanced comfort and agility. With Google Maps underpinning the navigation, calculating the fastest and most comfortable route is possible on every journey. The Guard 360 offers extra protection for any potential burglary or theft, with the all-round monitoring. The Entertainment Package upgrades your entertainment to the next level with a whole host of streaming services, gaming and productivity tools.
