The all-new MGS5 EV - Your Definitive Guide
The move towards better range is still ongoing, although there is perhaps less pressure on manufacturers with the UK’s BEV market now being more educated and familiar with the nuances of going green.
One of our most-popular pages in 2020 / 2021 was the “Longest Range Electric Cars” which grew in popularity at a time where 300 miles was deemed a hefty achievement for a car to travel. Fast-forward to 2025 and you will see circa 100 vehicles which can offer you 300 miles, or more, of driving on a full charge. Brands like Hyundai, Polestar, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Renault are now throwing their hats into the ring.
This is not the preserve of the luxury and expensive vehicles; more affordable and cost-effective solutions are able to offer you or the business a pragmatic option. When you consider the average vehicle on our e-car website at June 2025 can achieve 245 miles (real world) there is a clear recognition that progress has been made and the UK is really benefitting with firm solutions in both the new and used electric car market.
However, stories in the news and media are not always positive on this element. In Bristol Live only this week (2 June 2025) there was a story lamenting the state of some of Britain’s roads and charging infrastructure on a 242 miles journey from Somerset to Kent.
Utilising an older Mercedes EQC SUV, which are a 1st generation EV tech, the driver discusses some of the difficulties in accessing chargers, the waiting times to use them, the reliability of the quote charge (i.e... delivering below less than stated) as well as the concern about your vehicle delivering the stated range.
Finishing off the open statement “As for those undertaking long journeys in an EV, I can only hope this incident was an anomaly.” Obviously this brings about two very real observations for any current or potential BEV customers - 1) how can I understand, and be confident, in the vehicle range? and 2) are there enough chargers in the UK to complete a long journey?
To quickly overcome point 2, we refer our e-car customers to our charge point location partners Zap Map who provide a monthly synthesis on the state of the UK network . As you see for May 2025, we now have nearly 81,000 devices in just under 40,000 locations. Quite importantly, there were 1,344 new charge points added during May 2025 (Zap Map use net figures, so this includes those charge points which are decommissioned too).
To prey on the article above, which really would have benefitted from the driver using the amazing app from the Zap Map team, there were 385 new rapid/ultra-rapid points added. These are the points which add 50kW+ and 150kW+ and are now the focus for many drivers. With many customers now enjoying domestic and business charging infrastructure, much of the day to day driving is covered by the accessible and convenient solutions.
But for top-up solutions, especially within the longer trip analysis, robust and fast chargers are needed to appease any driver situation. This is a key focus of the Government and operators in the UK.
How do I know what range my EV will offer?
Education is often the key and yet a missing part of this aspect. Many drivers will be offered a simplistic WLTP combined analysis of how the EV will perform on a full charge (100%).
The Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure is a laboratory testing process which was brought about to ensure more rigorous and fair analysis of vehicle performance. For the electric car, this involves testing the vehicle for a specific duration, distance and speed.
While more comprehensive than the previous NEDC testing, this is not always reflective of what we say is a real-world analysis. As many EV drivers know, the conditions your vehicle incurs will determine the range. By this we mean the external temperature, driving speed and the driver behaviour.
What isn’t done across the UK network, is a standardised overview of the performance in a simple and pragmatic form. For our e-car customers, we use a summer v winter and motorway v city driving comparison to help this information be disseminated more easily.
Taking the new MGS5 here, we show you how this applies quite clearly. Using the Long Range 64kWh battery, you can see that a cold weather motorway travel would allow for 160 miles compared to the 335 miles of summer driving in the city! With every customer having a different need / requirement, this needs to be tailored to their lifestyle.
Why be good at one thing when you can be great … so says the tagline for the versatile SUV. Generous cabin space, intelligent driver controls, thrilling driving dynamics and abundance of safety features.
The lightweight and optimised chassis, rear-link suspension and stability mechanism are installed to ensure weight distribution and a comfortable ride and handling. The dedicated EV platform, a Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), is a vehicle architecture aimed to deliver battery efficiency via the ultra-thin technology now being used.
The 400V system allows for a degree of rapid charging (just below 150kW) and anxiety-reducing range. Yet the car is practical with up to 1441L of space, ample legroom and headroom. Technology is not absent either with a 12.8” HD touchscreen, 10.25” display screen, wireless charging, lane assist and the MG iSMART connectivity.
Colours include Arctic White, Black Pearl, Piccadilly Blue, Cosmic Silver, Dynamic Red and Camden Grey.
