Your Definitive Guide to the BYD ATTO 2 Electric Car Lease

Do UK drivers really understand EVs?

The BYD ATTO 2 Electric Car Lease-Your Definitive Guide

The media can be a swathe of good news. Especially recently, now that we have some more considered momentum for the installation of charging infrastructure. Last week we referred to the various stories about the Midlands receiving grants to ensure that the local constituencies were provided with sufficient resources to ensure that grassroots charging is improved.

In particular, there is a focus on improving facilities for those drivers who do not have the ability to charge at home because they do not have a drive or they live in a flat / tenanted premises.

Only yesterday (9 March 2025) the BBC reported on further funding initiatives for Northamptonshire Council, with £2.8m of Government funding to help more residents (without off-street charging) fuel their EVs. In particular, the council are trying to help more drivers access lower costs when utilising battery technology.  However, the same cannot be said of every news article and publication in the UK.

According to a joint effort by the  AA / Sky News  there are still some UK drivers who feel confused about the transition towards a zero-emission economy. In a comprehensive survey of 14,000 members, there were some interesting facts including:

  • 20% stated that they would never buy an EV;
  • 33% believed manual and auto derivative versions of EVs exist; and
  •  7% thought petrol and diesel vehicles were banned.

The article, which focuses on the report, does ask whether enough is being done by the Government to encourage an increase in the demand. In addition, there are submissions about the complexities of EVs, consumers being supplied with “the right information” on an electric and the costs surrounding EV ownership or usership.

The reality is that some of the critiques of our EV industry are founded. While charging facilities are now being addressed quite rapidly, the concerns about “range” on modern EVs have been overcome and a stronger used-EV programme now underway, the certification and standardisation of the sales process has not occurred. To some degree, car dealerships, leasing brokers and used-EV retailers will operate as they see fit.

The team at e-car have been doing things a little differently for nearly 5 years now. Working with some key data partners, we created an EVC™ to detail the key facets of using a BEV. But there isn’t just us, with newer companies like ClearWatt also looking to break down the elements of a used EV in a not so dissimilar fashion.

However, many out there have not yet been more specific with their approach, relying on manufacturer websites and generic data providers to help provide a positive experience. To be direct, this does not work and only leads to the confusion which the article above refers to. In simple terms, every personal and business leasing customer needs to consider:

  •  Battery size - shown as “kWh” helps you understand the cost of charging. Generally, the bigger battery, the longer the range / quicker the vehicle. However, the usable capacity also shows you how much electricity you will need to fuel it;
  •  Range - our metrics provide you the range in a number of environments such as motorway v city driving and warm weather v colder climates. As there are significant discrepancies between the various driving conditions, we do think that every customer should review these;
  •  Charging Times - every EV will have a different AC and DC charging capability. This helps you to appreciate the time it will take on slower facilities (home or work) and also the rapid solutions (service stations). Especially for those customers who are charging in the public network, the speed of the process is key;

  •  Charging Cost - there is no unilateral cost of charging. When you charge on a tariff, standard domestic tariff or in the public network, the price you pay per kWh will differ. Many customers do not know that some energy companies offer enhanced tariffs which save them 50 - 75% on the cost of charging. Other drivers are not aware of the more expensive DC charging experience (which incurs 20% VAT);
  • Performance - quantifying the power / 0 - 62 times is important. Many drivers do not understand what or how kW refers to power. Our guide translates kW to BHP for UK customers;
  •  Bidirectional -  helping customers to understand what V2L / V2G and V2H is and how this works in conjunction with their households. This is crucial for households with solar and renewable technology; and
  •  Running costs - there is more to your experience than just the electric vehicle - charge point location, motor insurance and energy tariffs need to be reviewed too.

If the UK is to achieve the ambitions of the ZEV Mandate, then facts and simplification are a fundamental component.
