The Hyundai Ioniq 9 Electric Car Lease - Your Definitive Guide
The move to an electric car is something which is happening in quite a fast and furious (excuse the reference) fashion in medical and health communities. Many NHS staff are probably somewhat familiar with electric cars; many of these are being procured through their salary sacrifice schemes which are so popular in 2024.
However, having a wide variety of choice is also crucial, with the EV market still undergoing a period of evolution and improvement. From city-cars to saloon to SUVs to 7-seat family options, there needs to be an abundance of robust vehicles to buy (or lease). The latest manufacturer to throw their innovation to the UK market is the South Korean group Hyundai, who have now confirmed that their 7-seat family option is ready to launch in 2025.
“Built to belong” the sleek and futuristic option is looking to build upon the success of the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 Saloon which have proved to be useful additions for the company car market and for those who operate successful limited companies, like the self-employed surgeons (which will be explored below).
The Ioniq 9 will include Parametric Pixels in the LED signature lights, streamlined aerodynamic architecture, alloy choices (19, 20 and 21”), Relaxation Seats for fully-reclining passenger seats, swivelling 2nd row seats so that you can create a lounge (face-to-face) effect in the rear or traditional 2nd and 3rd row seating arrangements to allow for 7 occupants in the EV.
As well as 1323L of carrying capacity (with 3rd row seats down) there are an array of exciting features like the 100W high output phone chargers, 12.3” cluster and infotainment curved displays, bidirectional charging (with the V2L allowing for the vehicle to charge other electric devices like bicycles or camping equipment), Dynamic Welcome and Escort Lights, innovative CarPay (for paying at car parks via the car), digital side mirrors, smart parking assist and highway driving assist (for autonomous driving).
While the UK leasing customers can register their interest at the Hyundai website - the car is not yet ready to order. However, with their collaboration with Kia still ongoing, it is expected that the Hyundai group will want to create a competitive alternative to the Kia EV9 (which is already on sale).
With genuine 7-seat BEVs not in copious supply, having a usable, aesthetic and pragmatic SUV which can allow for the seven people is a sage proposition. And with many UK surgeons operating a limited company, in addition to their NHS practice, having the ability to lease an array of family cars is always welcome.
As many businesses are now becoming aware, running a vehicle through your company will have tax implications on both the company and the driver / employee (even if this is a one-man organisation).
Contract hire is a usership product or operating lease, so the business will never be committed to buy or sell the vehicle. This means that you can change the vehicle every 2-4 years not unlike the NHS scheme.
The monthly rental you make each month is deductible against Corporation Tax. For a VAT registered business, you can reclaim up to 50% of the VAT on the finance and 100% of the VAT on the maintenance (so this represents a small cost-saving vs a personal lease).
Any charge point infrastructure or charging sessions, are all deductible against your Corporation Tax. While you can claim certain benefits in the event of a purchase, do consider there is a commitment to a depreciating asset. For the driver (employer or owner/shareholder), there is a negligible benefit in kind tax bill on the EV compared to a petrol or diesel car.
Combustion vehicles incur much higher tax implications, as HMRC run an emissions based tax regime. While a surgeon may be a high-earner, there are still key tax benefits which enables them to enjoy more considered advantages with all-electric transport.
