Your Definitive Guide to the Mercedes EQA Electric Car Lease

The Mercedes EQA electric car lease - Your Definitive Guide

The quandary we face in the UK is the extent to which the Government, manufacturers and dealerships / leasing brokers are doing enough to help UK personal and business customers move into electric transport.

It’s very much the hot topic of the moment, with the press and media hitting this from different angles and with an array of underlying themes. Earlier this week (2 December 2024), the BBC reported on the ways in which more could be done to encourage more uptake . The article looks at five suggestions which could help including:

  1. Subsidise - the article explores the potential for the Government to look at assisting customers procure a new electric car now that the plug-in grants have been removed on cars (they are still in place for vans / commercial vehicles). While we would support this, we also understand that the public purse strings are finite and we need to balance budgets. If we put grants against new cars, the risk is that manufacturers will increase their prices in-line with this incentive or you exclude customers who need more financial assistance, like those who engage in the used-EV sector. The obvious concern is that customers who genuinely need assistance, like the retail and consumer markets, miss out on incentives which business and salary sacrifice customers utilise instead (having already benefitted from the tax incentives). To some extent, this is how the market was manipulated previously;
  2. Cheaper Cars - make more affordable cars. Quite correctly, the author notices that a plethora of vehicles in the £50,000 to £60,000 bracket have been produced which is outside of the remit for many UK customers. With economies of scale and better brand engagement, we will see more EVs within the reach of the average consumer. Especially with price parity between EV and combustion models now becoming a reality. Plus, the vehicles which are cost-effective are not unusable, with modest battery configurations and ranges accompanying these options;
  3.  Confusion - the ZEV Mandate and Government approach has not been consistent. Dates for a forcible transition have altered around 2030 / 2035, with both the Conservative and Labour Government proffering different dates and obligations. With each discussion and change, we spread more doubt and more inconsistency across the UK. This often fuels the media’s anti-EV rhetoric. Those who have not yet driven, or transferred, to EVs are still doubting whether or not this will become the long-term solution;
  4.  VAT - the public charging experience is more expensive. Part of this is down to the VAT chargeable on public charging, which does not apply to charging at home (where VAT does not apply in the same way). By applying the 5% we pay at home, or removing it in its entirety, we make the charging experience outside of the home more pleasurable and affordable. There is an undertone that those drivers who cannot charge at home are being ripped off by HMRC;
  5. Public Charging - with the volume of EVs increasing on our roads, the suggestion is that by 2030, we need at least 300,000 charging points in place. While the statistics from our charging partners, Zap Map (https://www.zap-map.com/ev-stats), are very encouraging, with some 72,594 devices in 36,316 locations, there are still concerns over quantity and the quality of this experience. This is why front-end education, from the dealership or leasing broker, is so key. If we manage customer experiences more acutely at the beginning, this reduces the risk of any impairment or confusion after delivery.

One manufacturer which is aiming to be a UK favourite is the Mercedes Group, who are now pushing their popular EQA SUV more heavily.
