Exciting sports performance cars may not be the first thing that springs to mind when it comes to electric cars. But this is now a hotly contested part of the automotive industry as brands like Land Rover, Lotus, Maserati and Porsche are all producing all-electric derivatives for the UK’s personal and business leasing market.

While the name of the new EV is not yet confirmed, there are now rumours that this will cost around £425,000 when it becomes ready to order in 2025. There is still some query as to where it will be built, with the launch of a new factory in Maranello (Northern Italy) likely to be a front runner.

The team are already planning their 2nd EV, which is due to launch just after this initial product. Amidst a time of uncertainty and caution, this is a big move from the Italian supercar brand who are set to bring even more credibility to the zero-emission agenda. Another key brand in the EV sports car segment is the Audi e-Tron GT, which launched in late 2020 / 2021, and was produced in conjunction with the Porsche Taycan. Very quickly this became an iconic sports car for UK drivers with the Audi offering considerable value in this four-door Gran Turismo format.

And with the Audi EV launching at the time when HMRC reduced the BiK on zero-emission to 0%, this created an almost immediate demand for the car. Unlike traditional sports cars with just 2-doors and limited space, the GT Saloon proved to be practical and ergonomic, suitable for families and racing drivers alike! But this week (19 June 2024) the Audi engineering team confirmed a number of updates and revisions to this popular model, in-line with the recent updates to the Porsche Taycan product line-up.

But what has changed with the new e-Tron GT?

Aside from the fact that the first fully-electric RS will be launching, there are some new aesthetic, technological and battery changes to this incredible car. Inside, the new seats, steering wheel and digital layout are looking to set new standards.

Features like lights when you open the doors, matte camouflage, flattened steering wheel and sports seats will be present. The Audi group have updated the virtual cockpit with new information and features like the battery temperature analysis and Audi Connect services.

The advanced panoramic roof is a feature which allows the roof to turn clear or opaque at the touch of a button. And driver comfort hasn’t been ignored with the air suspension now able to offer driving dynamics and comfort. What can be furnished from the below, is that the new GT Saloon is now more powerful and more efficient. Acceleration and speed is now better with the latest model but with lighter batteries with higher density, the range capabilities and charging times are class-leading. And how will the new GT Audi perform?

There have been three confirmed battery options including:

•  GT S - From £108,995 the AWD option will have a 97 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.4 seconds, 152 mph top speeds and 500 kW (or 671 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 275 miles with warmer weather allowing for 370 miles - a combined 325 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 10 hours and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 320 kW DC maximum allowing 18 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 405L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 136 mpg. This option cannot tow. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. It has a heat pump;

•  GT RS - From £127,295 the AWD option will have a 97 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 2.8 seconds, 155 mph top speeds and 630 kW (or 845 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 265 miles with warmer weather allowing for 355 miles - a combined 315 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 10 hours and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 320 kW DC maximum allowing 18 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 405L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 131 mpg. This option cannot tow. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. It has a heat pump; and
•  GT RS performance  - From £143,795 the AWD option will have a 97 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 2.5 seconds, 155 mph top speeds and 680 kW (or 912 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 265 miles with warmer weather allowing for 355 miles - a combined 315 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 10 hours and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 320 kW DC maximum allowing 18 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 405L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 131 mpg. This option cannot tow. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. It has a heat pump.
