Your Definitive Guide to the new Nissan Leaf electric car lease

The new Nissan Leaf electric car lease - Your Definitive Guide

Running costs are one of the main reasons behind the move to an electric car. New or used, the rationale underpinning lithium battery transport is that they offer a cheaper solution to fuel compared to a petrol or diesel option.

Over the last few years, petrol station forecourts have been displaying some sizeable fuel prices, leading many UK motorists to reconsider how to proceed on their next vehicle. In contrast, the world of utility bills, gas and electricity, have made some potential BEV customers become a little concerned about their charging costs.

However, as recently reported within a number of news and media outlets, the ofgem  energy regulator has made some changes to the maximum amount that energy suppliers can charge their customers. As per the ofgem website, between 1 July and 30 September 2025, the energy price cap is set at £1,720 per year for a typical household that uses electricity and gas and pays by Direct Debit.

This is a decrease of 7% compared to the cap set between 1 April to 30 June 2025 (£1,849). For EV customers the key aspect to note is that the electricity rate will be changing from 27.03 pence per kWh to 25.73 pence per kWh.

What this means is that if you are charging at home, away from a dedicated EV tariff, your maximum charge will be set at the lower 25 pence rate. To contextualise this a little more eloquently, if you were take the existing  Nissan Leaf Tekna  the vehicle has a 39 kWh usable battery.

When you are trying to ascertain the running costs, you need to calculate the cost of charging this from 0 - 100% in conjunction with your price per kWh. The existing Leaf would cost around £10 for a “full tank” for this vehicle, which translates to 6.92 pence per mile.

With many petrol and diesel solutions now costing well above 15 pence per mile, the 50% saving in fuel is something which you cannot ignore. Fleet, salary sacrifice or personal lease, the whole proposition around the running costs and fuels remain relevant. This is precisely why utilising the best home charging tariff and being educated on the public charging facilities is so important.

Where much of the frustration arises with a BEV is a lack of education being offered to customers, which then leads to more issues further into the contract. Not understanding the cost of charge is a sure way to have a less enjoyable experience than what you should have.

Introducing the new Nissan Leaf electric car lease

Hoping to capitalise on the improving UK political and regulatory framework is the Nissan group. After 15 years they are now re-launching the iconic Nissan Leaf in a completely new format. The original Leaf was one of the “backbone” cars in the UK’s EV market; it offered value and functionality via a robust framework.

However, after using this option for so long, it was no surprise that the Japanese conglomerate announced their decision to revitalise this car. While the Ariya SUV has proved to be somewhat popular, growing competition from the Chinese brands like BYD and European brands like VW and Stellantis are pushing Nissan further out of the fold.

As a result, an all-new SUV is now coming from Nissan, with the new Leaf to be produced at the Sunderland plant later in 2025, with some deliveries looking to be actioned before Christmas 2025.

The new Leaf, with “sleek and timeless design”, will arrive with an 8 year battery warranty and energy consumption of around 4.38 miles per kWh. With a complete overhaul, the new Leaf will appear shaped like a teardrop with a streamed silhouette and aerodynamic lines.

With a width of 1.8m and length of 4.2m, the smart storage EV will be offering some 437L of boot space. But looks will not be absent, with the 3D rear lamps, dimming panoramic roof, twin 14.3” infotainment portal screens, ProPILOT with Navi-Link, 3D around view monitor, blind spot warning and Google in-built functionality. Colours will include Luminous Teal, Fuji Sunset Red, Pearl White, Sukumo Blue, Ceramic Grey and Fun Metallic (all with a black roof).
