In 2026, the UK market was set to have a number of concerns and difficulties; Chinese manufacturers swamping the market, accessibility issues for charging for those British people without a driveway, pay per mile tax and growing concerns about the residual values and attraction of a used EV.

However, as we press on towards the half-way stage of 2026, some of the anxiety surrounding these purported problems have not come to fruition. While much of this can be attributed to the Middle East conflict and its corresponding impact on the price of petrol and diesel, there are some other proactive measures which have helped the UK to go green.
Through various stakeholders and parties involved in the transition, more public charge points (especially ultra-rapid points) have been installed, red tape surrounding charge points for terraced properties and apartments is being removed, dedicated used electric car certification and sales/leasing programmes plus an increase in more familiar brands, like Skoda, launching new and exciting BEV products, increased confidence. So much so, as The Telegraph reports Britain is continuing to grow at a quicker rate than China.

As the article covers, the volume of new EVs is increasing with around 30% of new cars being a BEV. Further to research by the International Energy Agency, sales are up 25% in UK compared to 2025, with that set to increase further as the year progresses.
In China, the demand for electric vehicles remains but has been impacted by the declining subsidies offered by the Government, along with new taxation measures on EVs. Sales in China are set to be 1/5 lower than they were in 2025.
However, some 50% of vehicles sold in China contain some form of electrification, with battery AND plug-in hybrid still being offered in abundance. Yet, as The Telegraph does note, UK sales of zero-emission vehicles are still behind the political intentions of the ZEV Mandate which enforces strict standards on the manufacturers selling their wares in the UK.

For 2026, the expectation is that some 33% of new cars must be zero-emission, with the year 2030 being targeted for that to increase to 80%. By 2035, the UK will aim to be 100% zero-emission. Failing to do so can lead to penalties of £15,000 per non-complaint registration for manufacturers, so the incentives to hit these targets are very much there. Having a swathe of practical, yet affordable, all-electric car options is essential to this succeeding.
The new Škoda Epiq is very much the type of car which the UK’s leasing market does need. Built on the same platform as the upcoming VW ID Polo and Cupra Raval, this will offer the small SUV which many families in Britain have come to love and adore.

Compact, yet with a big potential, the agile and stylish Epiq is using bold designs and smart features to capture the imagination of personal, business and salary sacrifice customers across the UK. As per the Skoda brand website the new Epiq will launch in the following specifications:

On the exterior, the Tech-Deck face features T-shaped LED lights along with a robust black bumper. Compact in form, the pronounced tornado lines and aerodynamic wheels are testament to the group’s focus on battery efficiency and range.
At the rear, the T-shape LED lights make for style and clarity along with the rear aerodynamic diffuser which is there for stability and efficiency. The 475-litres of boot space, or 1,345 litres with the seats down, is a generous allowance for those with kids, dogs and the beyond! Not unlike the upcoming small EVs from VW and Cupra, the new Epiq will also allow for Bidirectional charging for those taking an Edition or First Edition, meaning you can charge external devices.
Inside the Epiq you can elect to have the Loft Grey, Loft Mint or Suite. The interior is a distinctly modern and solid experience with clean lines, sustainable materials and a clutter free Digital Cockpit.

Some of the key features include the 12” infotainment and digital cockpit, wireless charging, keyless entry, digital key, armrest with 2 cup holders, heated steering wheel, electrically adjustable front seats, variable boot floor, ambient lighting and the umbrella in the driver’s door.
The Skoda team will be launching with a series of packages such as the Premium (area view 360 degree camera, Canton sound system, electrically foldable, adjustable and heated door mirrors) and key upgrades like the panoramic roof, tow bar, memory seats and the heat pump.
