The previous automotive generations have all enjoyed some form of iconic performance motor; the VW Golf GTI, Ford Escort RS, Renault Clio Williams, BMW M3 and similar.
These were cars with real pull and adoration, so much so that many older drivers are restoring their favourite cars of years gone by to bring back that connection and passion to their vehicles. It is this energy which is key to the VW Group’s latest electric initiative - the ID3 GTX Fire and Ice - which is trying to emulate the connection which many UK drivers have to their performance cars.
This is more than just creating a functional and practical battery vehicle, this is about VW pushing a “powerful, iconic and individual” vehicle which pays homage to the 1990s MK2 generation of cars with spirit and distinction. While some hard-nosed petrol drivers have been against BEVs moving into this space, one of the key growth areas which e-car have experienced is with customers (personal and business) who are looking for that little bit more.
Having enjoyed a busy 2025 and 2026 for vehicles like the Smart #1 and #3 Brabus, Cupra Born VZ and the Skoda Enyaq VRs, the introduction of a VW GTI in all-electric format is welcome news to our team.
Supplementing the transition into quicker and more fun electric cars, is the swathe of positive reports on battery health and functionality. One of the early obstacles to drivers moving into a new, or used, EV has been the notion that the battery will be incapable of the demands of speed, longer distances or last the length of time many motorists need.
As mass-adoption began in 2020, there was an undertone that batteries would degrade quicker than our iPhones, need replacement every 8-10 years or create a costly exercise for UK drivers. The issue in disproving this has been time. Since we are only Year 6 into the EV transition, evidence and research is still fairly limited into this key aspect. However, more companies, like Generational+, are helping to provide key metrics and data for those involved in buying and selling EVs to utilise.
For the Used Electric Car industry as a whole, having these reports is key if UK customers are ever to wholly adopt this form of fuel. In their latest report GENERATIONAL+ , the 2025 battery Performance Index, the group have provided some key messages:
While the report pushed a key message that we completely support here at e-car lease, education and transparency, the results of the report are heartening for many of us involved and invested in this transition. Having a proposition which degrades no different to our combustion alternatives, proves that confidence in this as a long-term motoring solution is not misplaced. Especially when high-performance vehicles like the ID3 GTX enter the equation.
The Fire + Ice is a special edition concept which the VW Group are offering in limited supply to the UK leasing market (less than 2000 are to be offered globally). Available in just 2 key specifications, with or without the pan roof, the latest ID3 pays homage to the iconic 1990s MK2 Golf which was featured in the Fire and Ice edition.
Available in just one exclusive paintwork, Ultraviolet Black, the premium sports model is looking to harness the growing confidence and following which many drivers now have for the exciting world of electric car racing. While we will detail the performance below, it is the design and aesthetics which do need discussing first.
The outside of the Fire+Ice is distinguishing via the unique colour, which is a tribute to the predecessor model. A matt decal adorns the C pillar, while the roof spoiler utilises the Fire and Ice logo from 1990s version. Other standout features include the 20” Locarno alloys, LED tail lights, light projections on the doors and striking GTX trim.
Inside, the two-tone colour scheme continues the Fire and Ice theme with the distinctive racing seats and customises instrument panels, door trims and floor mats. Everything you want and need from your performance EV is featured in this innovation.
The ID3 GTX comes with superb standard specification - Interior Plus Package (for sports seats, electric massage function, augmented reality HUD and Harman Kardon sound packages), Convenience Package (2-zone climate and navigation), Assistance Package (for rear view camera, keyless access and ACC distance control), sports suspension, heated washer nozzles and heated jets, rear tinted glass, adaptive cruise control, dynamic road sign display,12.9” centre screen, auto dimming rear view mirror, LED Matrix lights and DCC adaptive chassis control.
While the standard ID.3 Fire and Ice GTX costs £48,360, you can opt to add some extras like the energy efficient heat pump, transport hitch for bikes, panoramic glass roof or the upgraded sports tyres. Personalise your own at the Volkswagen website.
