Our car of the month (September) is almost definitely the all-new Elroq SUV from Skoda. In the UK, we are a nation obsessed with SUV / 4x4 / Crossover style vehicles and this has carried over from the combustion side of the automotive segment into the battery one.
While Skoda are enjoying a profitable time for battery tech, their sister-company Porsche are not quite having the same results. As reported in the news and media, the Porsche board have made some tough decisions on their EV offering calling for a “reschedule” of the new platform for electric vehicles in 2030, with their new Cayenne to be made into a combustion and PHEV option only.
Instead their focus will be on petrol and hybrid platforms, which is why the Cayenne is not being produced in the electric-only format. While there is a tentative commitment to existing vehicles, like the Macan and Taycan, there is clear focus that their future is not going be solely dependent on the zero-emission market.
With this apparent change, we do note the interest in more cost-effective and functional options. With sports and performance cars only responsible for a small proportion of what we buy and lease in Britain, does the Porsche decision have much bearing on our progression?
There is a strong argument to say that this is relatively indifferent to us, especially when the Audi Q6 is built on the same platform as the Macan EV and can therefore be offered as a similar solution. The Taycan too can be effectively replaced by the similar Audi e-tron GT. The future of our transition into new and used electric cars is very much dependent on the cars for everyday people.
The Elroq is true testament to this. Great driving position, abundance of specification and practical yet not too large, this vehicle sits well within the realms of affordability.
One of the key questions coming from customers, personal or business, on the topic of cost-effectiveness is about the ability for a “no-deposit deal”. In an era where many UK customers are now becoming more cost-focused and attune to savings and financial frugality, the propensity to pay for a new EV with a big cash deposit is reducing.
With contract hire we don’t actually say deposit; we say initial rental. As the product is not overtly interest-led, the utilisation of higher down payments does not alter the overall cost payable by the customer in the same way as some hire purchase and Personal Contract Purchase deals. While there is a flexibility to choose an initial rental which meets your needs and requirements or a fixed ratio of 1/3/6/9/12, the total amount payable in all cases will be similar.
For fleets and salary sacrifice customers, there is an almost automatic default to the no initial rental / no deposit approach. Principally you set a fixed budget for your employees and this will operate in a banded system. Utilising a substantial first payment to impact the monthly rental is not something which would be fair or allowable in this context.
However, this isn’t to say that retail customers and small businesses (SMEs) should not also consider the prospect of reducing their capital outlay, in order to preserve cash reserves. With the total amount payable largely similar across the 2, 3 or 4 years, regardless of the payment structure, you should carefully consider your financial needs and requirements.
This is even more pertinent when we have recurring customers who renew / replace their EV every 2 years. The honest conversation is do you really want to find a big deposit every 2 years, when that money could be more usefully adopted by business investments or in your savings account. This isn’t a question of right v wrong for the financial structure of a lease deal. This is just to highlight your options so you don’t rush into the wrong one. Our e-car website and Lythium customer portal do show a total amount payable to this end.
One of our great deals for this year, the Elroq SUV, is almost certainly available on a no-deposit lease deal. The small SUV has proved to be one of the breakout cars of 2025, helping the VW group fill a void by offering a smaller or more compact family vehicle.
Rather than selling on luxury or novelty, the new EV is very much about being a functional and logical choice for UK families. Aspects like the sustainable ice scraper, mobile phone pockets in the seats, umbrella in the driver’s door and a host of useful technology like the digital cockpit, 13” display, rear view camera and predictive cruise control are testament to this.
But that is not to say you won’t be unimpressed - the wireless smartlink, rear armrest with 2 cup holders, ambient lighting and 2-zone climate are testament to this. Throw in the height adjustable parcel shelf, storage compartments in the boot and configurable boot which allows between 470 litre of space plus 5 passengers and you have a sage decision.
The flagship of the Elroq brand is of course the Sportline, which has proved equally popular in the bigger SUV Enyaq. Sportiness in every detail, this eye catching and modern specification offers a thrilling and dominant experience for UK drivers.
The key specification includes welcome light, sports seats, aluminium pedals, 3-spoke heated steering wheel, rear LED lights, adaptive cruise with traffic jam assist, electric boot with virtual pedal, rear view camera, blind spot detection, climate control, heated front seats, navigation, lane keeping system, privacy glass, wireless charging for your phone, LED lights, sports suspension and dynamic steering.
The key colours include Graphite Grey, Race Blue, Black Magic Pearl and Moon White. Configure your own bespoke option on the Skoda Elroq website.
