The Smart 5 Electric Car Lease-Your Definitive Guide
Electric cars are making an almost daily appearance in the news; some good and some bad. The future of vehicle electrification seems to be very much in the hands of the Labour Government, who are asserting that the 2035 ZEV Mandate will instead become a 2030 Mandate, meaning that petrol and diesel vehicles will no longer be sold (as new cars).
There is an element of nervousness and trepidation, with new and used EVs still causing some confusion for those who are yet to experience it. However, there are groups who are helping to spread more clarity and positivity in this area, such as the electric car club at Blackhall Mill Community Association.
As reported in the BBC this community group was set up 10 years and now consists of 6 electric vehicles. These are used to help people in the rural village to get around more easily, with car hire from £5 per hour or volunteer drivers on hand to help move residents around.
With robust charging facilities, these types of initiatives perfectly display just how EVs can be so beneficial to parts of the UK especially when you consider renewable energies, lower servicing and maintenance costs not to mention the absence of any tailpipe emissions in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Having electric car clubs in more remote parts of the UK will help demystify these products to those who might not ordinarily see them.
Hoping to join in the UK’s growing enthusiasm for electric cars is the Smart Automobile group. A joint venture between Mercedes and the Geely Holdings group, the Smart product range has so far included small city cars, hatchback and small SUV options, which you can see on our dedicated Smart EV leasing page.
But not content with the existing option, the Smart engineers have put together a bigger SUV which will be based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which is designed specifically for the EV market. “all-electric, all-intuitive” the Smart #5 is being described as unconventional in design, intelligent comfort and robust all-road performance. As some of you will notice from the website, the images are making the 5 look similar to the Land Rover Defender with its boxy and distinctive structures.
The battery details and performance are still not wholly available but the team are suggesting the SUV will have a 100 kWh battery coupled with the 800v electrical architecture which enables a sub-20 minute rapid charging time. While this will need road testing, the real-world range could be as much as 300 miles on a full charge.
Although not a 7-seater, like the new Peugeot 5008 and Volvo EX90, this will still be a bigger vehicle with 4705mm length and 1920mm width. Technology-wise, this option will feature dual 13” OLED infotainment touchscreens, a 10” digital driver display and augmented reality HUD.
Interestingly, the seats are designed to be re-purposed as beds, for those looking to use this as part of their adventure or nomadic lifestyle! Artificial intelligence will feature within the in-car entertainment to help provide the driver with accurate and relevant answers to their conundrums.
The Smart 5 is due to arrive in the UK early 2025 but you can register your early interest at the Smart manufacturer website. The vehicle is expected to feature in both single and dual-motor format and with an array of specification including the Premium and Summit Edition.
