Competition in the UK’s all-electric leasing market continues to increase as we see more and more brands enter the market along with many established ones continuing to update and upgrade their products in-line with customer expectations.
While much of the UK focus has been on affordability and price, with the new Electric Car Grant from the Labour Government looking to address this, there are still a number of other facets which remain important within the purchasing process.
Aspects like range, charging speeds / time and vehicle performance are still a constituent element of the procurement journey for many personal, business and salary sacrifice customers so this should never be something which is overlooked.
One company which has proved to be consistent in its endeavour to improve and excite the UK’s BEV demographic is the Tesla team. The American powerhouse, and the grandfather of the UK electric car revolution, are a brand consistently in the headlines via their leader Elon Musk. With positive and negative news equally balanced on this group, perhaps the prevailing theme is how the Tesla team will compete against the emerging brands of China.
BYD, in particular, is one such manufacturer which has managed to make an equally immediate and positive response within the UK lease industry. Launching the BYD Seal to compete against the Tesla Model 3 and then the BYD Sealion 7 to compete against the Tesla Model Y, the Chinese superpowers are making waves in the market.
As July SMMT figures set out, the BYD group managed 3,184 registations compared to the 987 from Tesla. Granted, BYD have a bigger and more diverse fleet, with a mix of smaller and cheaper EVs like the Dolphin and the Dolphin Surf plus the Atto 3, but this nevertheless presents a clear and present danger to Tesla unlike any they have faced so far in their rise to greatness.
While brand agnostic here at e-car lease, we can support the positive feedback behind the Sealion 7 SUV further to our extended test-drive. Responsive, fully-equipped and striking, our overview and video analysis do set out for a robust car leasing option.
However, the Tesla team are now pushing back with an exciting option of their own - the updated Model Y Performance. Revising and updating this family EV is no surprise, as this speaks to the brand’s understanding that many UK customers still appreciate the fun and excitement of a more driver-focused solution. The Model Y (Juniper) will still be centred around the core values affixed to the Model Y which includes:
The new Performance is the max adrenaline version of the product line-up. A driver’s car, this vehicle can adapt to your driving style and the ride conditions to enable a firm but pulse elevated experience. The design of the frame ensures the car remains fast and responsive while redesigned batteries ensure power and efficiency at the same time.
With an ultra-aerodynamic build, adaptive suspension and quality interior, the Tesla group are not immune to the demands of the UK public. Touches like the heated and ventilated bolstered seats with a thigh cushion are noted. As is the upgraded 16” front HD screen and 8” rear screen for the immersive experience we now demand from our vehicles. Add to that a full self-driving capability on the Performance Y and you have a potentially perfect new EV!
From £61,990 the car includes a new exterior design, adaptive suspension, unique drive modes, 21” Arachnid alloys, carbon fibre trims, 16” QHD touchscreen, Performance seats with heating and ventilation for the front seats, ambient lighting 8 exterior cameras, hands-free boot, heated steering wheel.
Emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot warning, dashcam and sentry mode, base autopilot, tinted windows and a 15-speaker / 1 subwoofer sound system. Key colours include the Stealth Grey, Pearl White, Diamond Black, Depp Blue and the Ultra Red. Additional options include the tow hitch and the Autopilot Packages - Enhanced Autopilot or the Full Self-Driving Capability.
