Leasing a Ford Explorer SUV Electric in the UK

Nearly a year ago, the e-car lease team reported on the new Ford Explorer EV and its impending arrival in the UK’s leasing market. Fast forward that 12 months, and the Ford team finally brought their “iconic design” to the market and this new vehicle is now ready for order in March 2024.

The compact crossover, or small electric SUV, is being built in Germany. But not unlike the other EV manufacturers, there will be some information and infrastructure sharing. The Explorer electric will be built on the new Volkswagen MEB platform and will utilise VW batteries and technology.

The result is a fascinating all-electric SUV with fast charging, advanced technology and superior comfort. And for Ford fans, this will provide a smaller, and cheaper, alternative to the existing Mustang Mach-E, which has been available since 2020 /2021 for UK lease customers.

What options of Explorer EV are there?

  •  Select – (starting from £45,875) the entry model still offers a considerable amount of basic specification and luxury. This includes 7-speaker sound system, soundbar, powered and heated driver’s seat with massage, 14.6” touchscreen, smartphone integration, 19” Aero alloys, partial Sensico trim, heated seats in the front, wireless phone charging, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, privacy glass, cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera;
  •  Premium  – (starting from £49,975) an array of enhancements includes the 20” Aero alloys, panoramic roof, 10-spker B&O sound system, full Sensico trim, ambient lighting, hands-free liftgate, matrix LED headlights and front door scuff plates.

In terms of colour options, choose between Frozen White, Agate Black, Magnetic, Artic Blue, Blue my Mind and Rapid Red. In terms of additional features, consider the Driver Assistance Pack (adds HUD, driver alert, 360-degree camera and active park assist), heat pump (a highly efficient pump that can be used to heat the cabin .

More efficient than the internal cabin heater, this option will help maximise range on cold mornings where the vehicle cannot be pre-conditioned) and a retractable towbar.

In terms of the battery options, Ford UK will be releasing two immediately which are:

  •  RWD Extended Range – this RWD SUV will have a 77 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 6.4 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 210 kW (or 282hp). Expect a combined winter range of 225 miles with warmer weather allowing for 305 miles – a 270 mile combined. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 135 kW DC maximum allowing 28 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 536L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 142 mpg. You can tow with this EV – 750kg (Unbraked) and 1000kg (Braked). It also has no V2L or V2G capabilities. The Heat Pump is optional; and
  •  AWD Extended Range – this AWD SUV will have a 79 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.3 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 250 kW (or 335hp). Expect a combined winter range of 225 miles with warmer weather allowing for 305 miles – a 270 mile combined. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 185 kW DC maximum allowing 26 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 536L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 138 mpg. You can tow with this EV – 750kg (Unbraked) and 1200kg (Braked). It also has no V2L or V2G capabilities. The Heat Pump is optional.

Later in 2024 expect a smaller battery option (which is cheaper and more affordable) which will perform as follows:

  •  RWD Standard Range – this RWD SUV will have a 52 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 9.0 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 125 kW (or 168hp). Expect a combined winter range of 145 miles with warmer weather allowing for 200 miles – a 175 mile combined. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 45 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 115 kW DC maximum allowing 33 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 536L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 136 mpg. You can tow with this EV – 750kg (Unbraked) and 1000kg (Braked). It also has no V2L or V2G capabilities. The Heat Pump is optional.

What is the range of a Ford Explorer SUV Electric?
At e-car lease we do not utilise the WLTP range of an EV, so our website does display different data from what you are seeing on manufacturer websites and other finance companies. The problem with the WLTP testing, is that it is very one-dimensional and does not always reflect how you will drive in the real world. Our data partners therefore use a more achievable analysis. For example, the Explorer EV Extended range will (on a full charge)  deliver 190 miles on a motorway in colder weather, with this increasing to 260 miles for urban and city driving. In warmer weather, this increases to 245 miles on a motorway and 390 miles in city driving

Can you tow with a Ford Explorer SUV Electric?
Yes – you can tow with this SUV. A retractable towbar is available for £900 from Ford directly.

What is the towing capacity of the Ford Explorer SUV Electric?
750kg (Unbraked) and 1000kg (Braked) for the RWD standard and extended range. The capacity increases to 1200kg (Braked)
