Leasing a Mustang Mach-E in the UK

When you think of a Mustang, an electric car doesn’t exactly spring to mind. It evokes thoughts of the quintessential American muscle car with power, aggression and speed. But Ford are now changing customer pre-conceptions of what a Mustang really means, as their new electric SUV landed into Europe in 2021. While Ford dabbled with electric cars via an early Focus EV innovation, compared to their French competitors (Peugeot and Renault) and Vauxhall, they haven’t been as responsive to the growing demand for electrified solutions from their customers. Practical, efficient and cost-effective EVs are now a primary concern for most manufacturers. And in the UK, political and social pressures are now confirming that brands like Ford must continue to evolve to the changing landscapes.

The decision to introduce the SUV Mach-E has been a sensible one by Ford’s engineers. SUVs (or 4x4s and Crossovers) are the most popular style of vehicle for UK personal, business and salary sacrifice customers. We now expect a car to be family-friendly, look great and possess a level of specification which meets our growing expectations. It’s accurate to say that the Mach-E does exactly that amidst aggressive aesthetics, luxury features and a healthy array of batteries and configurations including:

• A 70 kWh 198 kW RWD option;
• A 70 kWh 198 kW AWD option
• An 88 kWh 216 kW RWD option;
• An 88 kWh 258 kW AWD option;
• A 91 kWh 216 kW RWD option; and
• A 91 kWh 358 kW AWD option.

The Ford Website summarises these options above into RWD, AWD and GT.

Just looking at the product-suite above demonstrates just how serious Ford’s electric plans are. But is the Mach-E really suitable for our e-car lease customers? Well as a comparison, using the 70 kWh 198 kW RWD option, this provides the driver with 185 miles of colder climate driving and 250 miles in warmer weather on a full charge. This will take just over 7 hours to fully-charge (0-100%) on an 11 kW AC max and just under 40 minutes on the 115 kW DC max. And with 6.9 second 0-62 times along with 112mph top speeds, this is anything but a boring zero-emission vehicle. Who actually said that EVs were boring?

Turning towards the 88 kWh 258 kW AWD option, this provides the driver with 220 miles of colder climate driving and 295 miles in warmer weather on a full charge. This will take just over 9 and a half hours to fully-charge (0-100%) on an 11 kW AC max and around 45 minutes on the 115 kW DC max. And with 5.8 second 0-62 times along with 112mph top speeds, this offers great performance too. Looking for the ultimate Mach-E? Just go for the 91 kWh 358 kW GT which offers nearly 500hp for a 0-62 time of sub 5 seconds and 124mph top speeds!

And while the Mach-E is clearly more than just family friendly, this performance EV is set to be a key seller in the UK for 2022 and 2023. While Ford, with their Fiesta, Puma and Focus, have been fundamental parts of the UK’s automotive industry, the Mach-E did not feature in 2021’s top-selling list. Of course, microchip and COVID delays disrupted manufacturers but Ford really do need to make a concerted effort to see more success with the UK’s EV demographic.

But why are cars like the Mach-E so popular with business contract hire customers? Some of the key changes to the UK’s tax regime was to minimise BiK (Benefit in Kind) on electric vehicles. This means that from April 2022, a Ford Mach-E lease will incur just 2% BiK – company car drivers will be paying tens of pounds per month in tax compared to hundreds (or more) with their petrol or diesel equivalents. But for fleet managers, the move towards an electric Ford fleet does need consideration, with home and workplace charging, Whole of Life cost analysis and electric car insurance forming part of the decision-making process. And the same will apply to salary sacrifice schemes too.

How much is a Ford Mach-E Electric to lease?
While Ford are commonly referred to as a cost-effective manufacturer, with their combustion product being some of the UK’s best-selling cars and vans, their EV offering is not so cheap in comparison. With the Mach-E costing somewhere between £42,000 - £67,000, expect contract hire rentals of around £400 - £700 per month. This will always depend on the model chosen (plus the contract required). However, do not add this to your list if you are looking for an affordable EV to lease.

Is a Ford Mach-E Electric a good car to lease?
Ford were surprisingly slow to bring out their pure-electric offering and while the decision to bring out a more luxury SUV / Crossover was perhaps a positive one for growing their brand, the price tag on the Mach-E does mean that customers will really expect that the product delivers. This will effectively be competing against the Tesla Model Y, VW ID.5 and the Skoda Enyaq Coupe. While early teething problems with the battery tech led to recalls and delays, the product is now in full flow and is getting some positive response from the automotive press. One thing for certain is that the car looks great and the design engineering team have done a fantastic job. But ultimately the discerning UK customer will be utilising test-drives and in-depth analysis.

Is a Ford Mach-E electric lease right for me or the business?
If you are looking for a visually exciting EV, coupled with the interior familiarity which Ford brings, then you won’t be disappointed with the Mach-E. And the introduction of the GT performance EV, which is definitely worth the investment, is likely to quench the thirsts of even the most hardened petrolheads (GT adds 20” alloys, wheel lip mouldings, black door cladding, performance seats, GT scuff plates and MagneRide suspension). However, understanding if the Ford EV is right for you or the business involves taking into account the nature of contract hire / leasing (a long-term usership product) and the EV lifestyle. For example, home and workplace charging infrastructure, charging times and charge points along your regular commutes will help ascertain if this really is the best car. Just because a Ford EV is so cost-effective on a business lease or via a Salary Sacrifice scheme doesn’t mean you should choose it.

Where do I find the best Ford Mach-E lease deals in the UK?
Many of the e-car lease Mach-E electric car leasing deals are available on our pricing partners websites like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. However, we also understand that customers need to visit their local Ford dealership experts to test-drive the product and procure comparable hire purchase and personal contract purchase quotations. Remember that contract hire is a usership product.

What is the cheapest Ford Mach-E Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing, the cheapest Ford EV to lease is the Estate 198kW Standard Range 70kWh RWD 5dr Auto. However, with a price of over £40,000 for a new car, the e-car lease team would not suggest this is a cheap car. Use the deal configurator on our bespoke electric car website to get an instant price – alter the term, annual mileage and initial rental / deposit to procure the best deal on the Mach-E.

What is the range of an electric Ford Mach-E?

How far the Mach-E can travel on a full charge will be crucial to most of our customers. The e-car lease team do stress that you use the “Living with …” tools from our Lythium partners, which helps you, the fleet manager or directors understand what to expect from the new Ford. You will note the different ranges shown on the e-car lease website which are taking into account weather, driving style and driver behaviour. Please see the combined real-world ranges below:

• A 70 kWh 198 kW RWD – 215 miles
• A 70 kWh 198 kW AWD – 205 miles
• An 88 kWh 216 kW RWD - 270 miles
• An 88 kWh 258 kW AWD – 260 miles
• A 91 kWh 358 kW AWD – 255 miles

Can you tow with a Ford Mach-E?
Yes - you can purchase a detachable tow bar (with electrical kit and trailer rear module) from Ford. This currently costs just under £550.

What is the towing capacity of the Ford Mach-E?
We expect many customers to utilise the bigger battery and AWD model (the 91 kWh ER AWD) . This EV has a towing capacity of 750kg (unbraked) and 1000kg (braked).

What is the MPG of the Ford Mach-E?
This vehicle’s fuel equivalent will depend on the model chosen. For example the SR RWD has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 127mpg  whereas the ER AWD has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 120mpg
