Leasing a GWM ORA Funky CAT Electric in the UK

Affordable and cost-effective electric cars are what the UK needs in order to secure an effective transition to zero-emission driving. But the reality of the situation is that the vast majority of BEVs are priced above and beyond £40,000, which for many leasing customers can be price obstructive. Yes, there are company car tax savings and Whole of Life cost benefits in utilising a battery but for some, particularly smaller businesses and retail consumers, there does need to be smaller and cheaper EVs to lease or buy.

The Great Wall Motors produced “Funky Cat” is aiming to be one of the UK’s answers to cheaper electric transport and the groups leading tagline “meet your future friend” is now ready to order for purchase or lease in the UK (from 28 November 2022).

The Chinese automotive company has been producing and selling this hatchback, or subcompact, since late 2020. But the entry to European markets only took place in mid-2022. New entrants to the car market are now more warmly received, as EVs do seem to have eroded the notion of badge and image more so than combustion was able to do.

Great Wall were founded in 1984, so they are anything other than a new start, and have found immense success in the Asian region. They are a top 5 plug-in manufacturer in China, which is praise indeed with much of the best lithium-ion solutions originating from the Chinese region.

But what about the Funky Cat’s performance and battery – does it have a robust range / charging time?

With a 47.8 kWh lithium-ion battery this will offer 0 – 62 times of 8.3 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 126 kW (or 169 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 145 miles with warmer weather allowing for 195 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the moderate 64 kW DC maximum allowing 47 minute 10 – 80% times. Boot capacity, with seats up, is stated to be 228L and 858L with the seats down. There will be no towing available with this EV.

The Funky Cat hatch forms part of a 2018 partnership with BMW, which has seen electric Mini production move to China. With hints of a Vauxhall Adam or Fiat 500 in external appearance, this option will be competing with the Nissan Leaf, MG4 EV and VW ID.3, so its success will be anything other than guaranteed.

But will the Funky Cat EV have good specification like the competitors?

The initial product will arrive as a First Edition and this will include Sat Nav, a 10.25” Instrument Display and Cluster, auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, 360 degree camera, lane keep assist, high beam assist, facial recognition system, keyless entry and start, auto AC, LED lights, wireless phone charging, rear parking sensors and auto dimming rear mirror. In terms of colours, you can have the Nebula Green, Starry Black, Aurora Green and Mars Red.

How much is a GWM ORA Funky Cat Electric to lease?
The launch model will arrive at just under £32,000, making this one of the cheapest electric cars to buy or lease in the UK. With more models due to Europe, this price may become a little lower if more basic options make their way into production. Expect leasing deals to be around £275 - £400 per month, mileage, term and initial rental / deposit dependent.

Is a GWM ORA Funky Cat a good car to lease?
As the EV has been in production for some time in China, UK customers can be assured that this is not a new product which has not been tried and tested. And the UK automotive websites and publications have also been receiving this warmly with measured scores of 4/5 from Autocar, 4/5 from Auto Express, 3.6/5 from Parkers and 7/10 from TopGear. Many of the tests do promote this as a credible small EV to use – responsive, comfortable but with a robust specification / tech. The only major drawback is the rapid charging capability, which at sub-100 kW, make this underwhelming for a modern BEV.

Is a GWM ORA Funky Cat Electric lease right for me or the business?
The move towards an EV is not without some concern or query for many first-time leasing customers. While the price tag of the Funky Cat is likely to be attractive, the suitability of the finance product (contract hire) and the product (the car) does need exploration. With contract hire, this is a usership product based on rentals over a fixed term; you cannot buy the vehicle and charges will apply to return it before contract cessation. In addition, by using our “living with your ...” tools to ascertain the range, charging speeds, full charge costs and company car tax, we do focus on providing solutions which are suitable for our customer’s needs and requirements.
