Leasing a Mercedes CLA Electric Saloon in the UK

The UK’s favourite car brand is now bringing a game-changing EV to the market for Q3 2025. The new Mercedes CLA saloon will now be launching in all-electric format with “EQ Technology” to be added to the petrol and plug-in hybrid options.

Self-described as a “class of its own” the CLA is a much needed refresher to a market becoming stale with the BMW i4, Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 still the only key options 5 years into their respective launch. Being direct, the Mercedes group needed to bring something extra after their EQE and EQS saloon failed to really hit the expectations of the UK leasing market. Smaller, and more affordable, cars reminiscent of what the Mercedes team, are known for was sorely required.

Striking and angular, the CLA will enjoy a new drivetrain, illuminated front design and on overhauled sporty and aerodynamic design. The shark-nose front, frameless doors, aerodynamic wheels and flush-mounted door handles are testament to clinical German engineering. Inside, you will enjoy the overwhelmingly Mercedes interior but with the addition of futuristic and connected technology.

The MBUX Superscreen is an interesting feature, along with the MB.OS driver system. As can be seen below the 1st version to be built on the modular architecture will offer some incredible range and charging abilities.

So, what specifications and options are available in the new CLA EQ?

At May 2025 (when production officially starts) the group have confirmed 3 key options including:

  •  Sport Edition – from £45,615 this comes with sport bodystyling, 19” alloys, full artico leather, smartphone integration, privacy glass, parking package, comfort seats, interior camera with facial recognition and video function, two-tier console, comfort seats, 14” central display, 10.25” driver display, LED performance headlights, heated front seats, 4-way lumbar support, rear view camera, blind spot assist, adaptive cruise control and the 101L frunk;
  •  AMG Line Edition – from £49,375 this adds AMG bodystyling, 18” AG alloys, artico in black with white or red contrast, seamless door handles, keyless-go, ambient lighting and wireless charging; and
  • AMG Line Premium Edition - from £51,770 this adds 19” AMG alloys, white fibre trim elements, night package, memory seat package, multibeam LED lights and the entertainment package.

In terms of personalisation, choose between black/clean white, black/red power or just plain black with red stitching for the interior. Key exterior colours include polar white, cosmos black, Patagonia red, sapphire blue and alpine grey. A cost-option memory package can be added to the AMG Line Edition.

And how does the Mercedes CLA EV perform?

There will be 2 battery options for UK customers including:

  •  250+  with a usable battery of 85 kWh this RWD offers 200 kW (268hp), top speeds of 130 mph and 0-62 times of 6.7 seconds. Real-world ranges suggest a combined 290 miles in colder weather with warmer temperatures to allow for 410 miles (on a full charge) - 350 miles combined . The 11kW AC allows for 0-100% charging times of 9 hours and 15 min with the 320kW DC enabling 10-80% in 22 minutes. The saloon has no confirmed Bidirectional charging. It has a 167 mpg equivalent, 405L cargo volume and offers towing capacities of 750kg (unbraked) and 1500kg (braked). The heat pump is standard; and
  •  350 4Matic with a usable battery of 85 kWh this AWD offers 260 kW (349hp), top speeds of 130 mph and 0-62 times of 4.9 seconds. Real-world ranges suggest a combined 285 miles in colder weather with warmer temperatures to allow for 395 miles (on a full charge) - 340 miles combined . The 11kW AC allows for 0-100% charging times of 9 hours and 15 min with the 320kW DC enabling 10-80% in 22 minutes. The saloon has no confirmed Bidirectional charging. It has a 162 mpg equivalent, 405L cargo volume and offers towing capacities of 750kg (unbraked) and 1800kg (braked). The heat pump is standard.

With prices starting around £45,000 to £50,000 (spec dependent) this CLA is very much a direct competitor to the Hyundai Ioniq 6, BMW i4, Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3. The price point will be similar to the petrol / PHEV options from Mercedes, so this may be a solution for both personal and business customers. That being said, with continuing tax advantages for company car and salary sacrifice schemes, the corresponding income tax savings are pertinent.

While the CLA is a stunning vehicle, with style, substance and technology, the move into a BEV option should also bring about thought and consideration before the sale / lease is cemented.

The nuances of green driving include the charging times, range, charging infrastructure and the implications of driving styles and weather on performance of the car.

To help our customers, our e-car website provides (free of charge) our “living with your ...” tools and EVC™ certificates to explain the fundamental aspects and data on the vehicle. Key metrics such as real-world range, charging times (AC and DC), charging costs, charge solutions, performance and towing capacity along with charging tariffs, motor insurance and bidirectional charging are discussed.
