Leasing a Mini Cooper Electric in the UK

In 2019, BMW announced that their ever-popular Mini hatchback would be released in all-electric format and nobody would have imagined just how popular this city car would be. But between 2019 and 2023, the Mini EV has proved to be one of the favourite small BEVs for both personal and business leasing customers to enjoy, with many low-mileage customers opting to jump into this over the Renault Zoe, Vauxhall Corsa electric and Nissan Leaf. With familiarity of style, interior and exterior, plus the quirkiness of character this 3-door option did propagate the electrification journey for Mini.

But the Mini EV was the first innovation from the German manufacturers and while there were some clear pros to this, the cons were much battery focused.

With just a 33 kWh battery, the real world range of 110 miles did little to encourage those with range-anxiety into lithium battery tech. Add to that the sub-50kW DC rapid charging time and you do have some frailties for those who do need to top-up charge regularly or who have longer-mileage requirements.

But in late 2023, Mini announced that a revamp of this model would be taking place ready for UK customers to order in early 2024 (with this model to be built at the Mini Oxford plant from 2026!)

Moving away from the “Mini Hatchback Electric” title, the 2nd generation EV from the team will now be called an “all-electric Mini Cooper”.  And to provide more choice to lease customers there will be two key battery options, including:

  •  E - from £30,000 this FWD hatch will have a 37 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 7.3 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 135 kW (or 181hp). Expect a combined winter range of 120 miles with warmer weather allowing for 170 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 4 hour 0 – 100% charging times with the 75 kW DC maximum allowing 27 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 200L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 159 mpg. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will not be able to tow;
  •  SE - from £34,500 this FWD hatch will have a 49 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 6.7 seconds, 106 mph top speeds and 160 kW (or 215hp). Expect a combined winter range of 160 miles with warmer weather allowing for 220 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 95 kW DC maximum allowing 29 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 200L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 157 mpg. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will not be able to tow.

Moving to the specifications, the Mini lines will consist of:

  •  Classic – LED headlights, 16” alloys, Mini Interaction Unit, air conditioning, cruise control, safety features – forward collision, lane departure, speed warnings, parking assistant with rear view camera, navigation, Apple CarPlay and armrest;
  • Exclusive – this spec adds 17” alloys and Vescin upholstery. The Exclusive is about modern, and sophisticated, detail which focuses on premium appeal; and
  • Sport – the race-inspired model is very much JCW influences, with black high-gloss, knitted material for the sports seats, sports steering wheel and 18” alloy wheels.

The new Mini will also be offering Packs in “Level” format. For example, the Level 1 in an E will offer adaptive LED headlights, comfort access, folding wing mirrors, heated front seats, high-beam assist and HUD. The SE will offer the Level 2 for options like the driving assistant plus, Harman/Kardon sound system, high beam assist and wireless charging. The Level 3 has Active Seat for driver, electric memory seats, interior camera, Navigation AR, panoramic glass sunroof and parking assistant plus.

Not unlike the existing model, Mini Cooper customers can enjoy colours like Midnight Black, British Racing Green, Blazing Blue and Nanuq White. Colour contrast roof and mirror caps will be featured along with a host of alloy and interior options. The individualised character of the car hasn’t been missed.
