Leasing a Smart #1 in the UK

Are there enough affordable electric crossovers to lease?

The future of electrification is more than just luxury and prestige vehicles, or those with the biggest range and charging capability. Providing for mass EV transition across the UK does need cost-effective, and cheap, zero emission product.

While Smart have already provided some solutions, with their Fortwo coupe, Fortwo cabrio and Forfour, the issue was that these lower priced cars posses small 17 kWh batteries. This alienated the demographic of drivers to those that could allow for around 55 miles of range on a full charge. In short, a good innovation but not overly workable day to day.

However, for 2023 personal and business customers can look to Daimler AG’s new all-electric smart #1. A joint venture between Mercedes and Geely Holding, this subcompact crossover is set to be top seller in 2023.

But can the upcoming electric “#1” really deliver a good experience – will it live up to the name?

On the technical configuration, the battery will perform in accordance with the model for example:

Pro – this SUV will have a 47 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.9 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268hp). Expect a combined winter range of 140 miles with warmer weather allowing for 190 miles. On charging, the 7.4 kW AC max will allow 7 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 130 kW DC maximum allowing 32 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 370L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 142 mpg. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will not be able to tow;

Pro+ and Premium – the 62 kWh usable lithium battery will deliver 0 – 62 times of 6.7 seconds, 112mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268hp). The new Smart will be one of the best performance vehicles in the class. On range, the smart #1 will offer around 175 miles in winter and 235 miles in warmer weather on a full charge – an average real world range of circa 220 miles. Where this car is truly impressive is on charging times. As we say at e-car lease, the charging capability is as important, if not more, than range. This EV will allow for an amazing 22 kW AC maximum for just under 3 hour and 30 mins 0 – 100% times with the 150 kW DC rapid charge max allowing for 27 minute 10 – 80% times.

Brabus – the 62 kWh usable lithium battery will deliver 0 – 62 times of 3.9 seconds (so yes, it’s quick!), 112mph top speeds and 315 kW (or 422hp). The new Smart will be one of the best performance vehicles in the class. On range, the Brabus will offer around 165 miles in winter and 220 miles in warmer weather on a full charge – an average real world range of circa 195 miles. Where this car is truly impressive is on charging times. As we say at e-car lease, the charging capability is as important, if not more, than range.

This EV will allow for an amazing 22 kW AC maximum for just under 4 hour 0 – 100% times with the 150 kW DC rapid charge max allowing for 30 minute 10 – 80% times.
The smart 1 is one of the best small EVs to choose from if charging speed is key to you. For further advice on the best EVs for range and charging speeds, don’t forget to check out our Electric Vehicle Comparison which has the ultimate guides for this information.

And what specifications will be available on the new smart?

This small SUV is likely to launch with three options, including:

  •  Launch Edition – will feature CyberSparks LED lights with adaptive highbeam, 19” Prism alloys, exclusive colour and trim including duo leather seats, wireless phone charging, 64-colour ambient lighting, powered liftgate with footkick gesture, 12.8” touchscreen with a 10” digital instrument cluster, 13 speaker and keyless entry;
  •  Premium – set to include CyberSparks LED lights with adaptive highbeam, 19” Rotor alloys, the Halo panoramic roof, illuminating door handles, duo leather seats, 12.8” touchscreen with a 10” digital instrument cluster, wireless charging pad, head up display, frameless door with a unique fitted look and 13-speaker audio system;
  •  Pro+ - this option adds 19” Amps alloy wheels, man-made leather seats, a free-floating centre console, 12.8” touchscreen with a 10” digital instrument cluster and automatic door handles; and
  •  Brabus - this performance option brings out the sport side of the car with key highlights like CyberSparks LED lights, panoramic sunroof, sporty body style, red painted brake callipers, sport pedals, heat pump 19” Dynamo alloys, and HUD.

How much will the Smart #1 be to lease?

Because Daimler have not yet officially launched this crossover, the e-car lease team can only provide indications. This small SUV will begin at around £35,000. So, expect lease prices to be around £350 - £550 per month. However, the great thing about leasing your all-electric Smart is that you, or the business, have the opportunity to choose a contract which meets your needs and requirements.

Our team don’t operate a “fixed price”, you get to say how long you want to use the car for, how much initial rental / deposit you wish to pay and utilise an annual mileage which is in line with your regular commute. And for complete cost certainty, you can include a maintenance package to cover all servicing, maintenance, tyres and breakdown recovery for the duration.

For any fleets or salary sacrifice customers, this is an essential part of effective fleet management. But our e-car lease experts can help you with more, including charge point solutions for domestic or commercial installation or motor insurance and fleet policies. Ensuring you have a comprehensive and robust service is key to our business.

Is a Smart #1 a good car to lease?
Because there has yet to be an official launch, there is still limited information available on the new crossover. In a preview from Electrifying, the team rate this as 8/10 based on the performance, size and cost-effective price. Driving Electric see this as a Kia Niro EV rival which will revive the brand in the electric segment. And Fully Charged provide a positive response in a walkaround of the product (although there is some concern of more SUV and Crossover product being added to the electric car market).

Is a Smart #1 lease right for me or the business?
The new SUV is likely to tick the boxes based on size, practicality and charging speed – not to mention the impressive 0 – 62 times (and who said EVs are boring!!??). But making the most out of an electric car does need some education and research. That’s why our “living with your ...” tools are so crucial. From range to charging times to P11d to charge cost to cost per mile, we answer everything you need to know about the EV lifestyle.
