Leasing a Volvo EX30 in the UK

The move to electric car dominance is now well underway with more and more manufacturers releasing new and diverse product for a plethora of customers and in a variety of segments – hatchbacks, compact SUVs, family SUVs, estate and saloon are now in demand.

And for the Gheely-owned Swedish car manufacturer Volvo, their commitment to go all-electric by 2030 will necessitate some gargantuan efforts and exceptional dedications to lithium-ion (or hydrogen) technology. So, it is not surprising that in June 2023, a new compact SUV was announced – the EX30 – to sit alongside the C40, XC40 and EX90 already available to lease in the UK.

What is the EX30?

This full-electric small family SUV, or compact, will be the smallest SUV which Volvo have ever made. But with the choice of two battery configurations – a 49 kWh and 64 kWh – as well as a single and dual motor, the brand is not going to be asking their leasing customers to compromise on options and choice. And really, the key to making your electric dreams a reality are just that; provide your personal, business and salary sacrifice customers with flexibility.

What options / specification will the EX30 have?

As at June 2023, the Volvo website is suggesting two key variations including:

  •  Plus – from £33,795, this entry model will include adaptive cruise control, Harmon Kardon premium sound, Safe Space technology, heated steering wheel, 12.3” centre display, collision avoidance and mitigation, front camera, LED headlights with active beam, lane departure warning, lane keeping aid, parking assist (front and rear) with a rear camera, 18” alloys, ambience themes, powered tailgate, hill start and descent control, alcohol lock software, digital key plus, heated front seats, 5G capability, Apple CarPlay and wireless phone-charging; and
  •  Ultra – from £42,045 the upgraded version adds panoramic glass sunroof, park pilot assist, 360 degree camera, tinted rear windows, park pilot assist, 20” alloys, power 4-way lumbar support and power driver/passenger seat.

On colours for the EX30 choose from Cloud Blue, Onyx Black, Vapour Grey, Crystal White and Moss Yellow. On the Ultra, you do have interior choices with the Mist, Indigo and Breeze. With the Plus, you can choose between Indigo and Pine interior.

But is the Ex30 a good EV – how do batteries perform? What is the range? How big is the vehicle?

As there are three possible configurations, please choose from the below:

  •  Single Motor – starting from £33,795 the 49 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.7 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268 hp). This model is a RWD option. Expect a combined winter range of 145 miles with warmer weather allowing for 200 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 134 kW DC maximum allowing 27 minute 10 – 80% times. A small family SUV, this has a cargo volume of 234L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 147 mpg (the vehicle is 4233mm Long x 1836mm Wide). This EX30 model can tow 1000 kg braked;
  • Single Motor Extended Range - the 64 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.3 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268 hp). This model is a RWD option. Expect a combined winter range of 190 miles with warmer weather allowing for 260 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 7 hour 0 – 100% charging times with the 153 kW DC maximum allowing 28 minute 10 – 80% times. A small family SUV, this has a cargo volume of 234L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 145 mpg (the vehicle is 4233mm Long x 1836mm Wide). This EX30 model can tow 1400 kg braked; and
  •  Twin Motor Performance - the 64 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.6 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 315 kW (or 422 hp). This model is an AWD option. Expect a combined winter range of 190 miles with warmer weather allowing for 255 miles. On charging, the 22 kW AC max will allow 3 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 153 kW DC maximum allowing 28 minute 10 – 80% times. A small family SUV, this has a cargo volume of 234L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 145 mpg (the vehicle is 4233mm Long x 1836mm Wide). This EX30 model can tow 1600 kg braked.

Where the EX30 really shines is the cost / value it offers. While there is an abundance of EV solutions for customers to lease, the obvious concern for many has been the focus on more expensive and luxury cars.

Many EVs start at £40,000 (and upwards) which for a business contract hire / fleet or salary sacrifice arrangement is less problematic (due to the tax savings), for personal customers who are using retail finance like PCH and PCP, the true cost of the EV is incredibly important. While there are Whole of Life cost savings with battery vehicles, this doesn’t mean that manufacturers can charge a premium for their product.

A salient balance does need to be achieved otherwise the transition to zero-emissions will not be a smooth one. Volvo do deserve some credit for their new EX30 which is a true testament to their recognition of budgets and value for UK leasing customers.

How much is a Volvo EX30 to lease?
Starting from £33,795 OTR and going up to £44,495, the new Volvo will be one of the cheapest electric SUVs to lease. Expect leasing deals to start around £299, with prices upwards of £500 per month, specification and contract dependent. The EX30 will undoubtedly be one of the best value all-electric options for 2023 / 2024.

Is a Volvo EX30 a good car to lease?
Volvo are anything other than new to electric SUVs and crossovers, with their existing XC40 and C40 platforms being offered positive reviews from the UK’s automotive press. With What Car? at 4/5 and CarWow at 8/10 on the existing XC40, it is hoped that the EX30 will continue in the same vain. As Volvo suggest, “big electric performance in a small package”. But the new car won’t be without competition; compare this against the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV and the BYD ATTO 3.

Is a Volvo EX30 lease right for me or the business?
As the UK’s leading electric car leasing company, we understand exactly what our personal, business and salary sacrifice customers need to know before they buy or lease their new Volvo EX30. And this isn’t about overcomplicating the situation; our EVC™ - Electric Vehicle Certificate – is the expert way to lease your new electric car. Setting out the real-world range, charging times, charging costs, performance plus introducing you to a whole host of key partners, you can be rest assured of a seamless transaction. Based on your needs and requirements, our expert team tailor the solution which is right for you. Remember that price and aesthetics are not everything when it comes to EVs.

Where do I find the best Volvo EX30 lease deals in the UK?
The special offers section of our e-car website will show some of the best deals on electric cars which are either in stock or on a factory order basis. And while the detailed information we provide is class-leading, we do understand that some customers are chasing their perfect contract. If you need to review market prices, head to CarWow, LeaseLoco and Leasing.Com. These electric car price comparison websites help you understand if you are getting a good deal from the leasing broker.

What is the cheapest Volvo EX30 Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (June 2023) the cheapest model will be the Volvo EX30 Estate 200kW Single Motor Plus 51kWh 5dr Auto at £33,795. This will be one of the cheapest EVs in the segment.

What is the range of an Electric Volvo EX30?
As per the e-car website   leasing customers can quickly work out which Volvo has the best range (on a full charge) and factor this into their daily / weekly commutes. But understanding range does need some thought as using just one figure (particularly WLTP) isn’t always that productive. EVs will perform differently according to external temperature, driving style and speeds. This is why our “living with your …” is so detailed. For example, the Single Motor standard EX30 will cover 175 miles (combined) on a full charge but this would be 125 miles on a cold weather motorway journey but 255 miles in warm weather city driving. In the same way, the Twin Motor Performance would be 225 miles (combined) but this would be 160 miles on a cold weather motorway journey or 325 miles in warm weather city driving

Can you tow with a Volvo EX30?
Yes - you can add a towbar to the EX30.

What is the towing capacity of the Volvo EX30?
The Volvo EX30 SM has a towing capacity of 1000kg (braked), the EM extended has a towing capacity of 1400kg (braked) and the Twin Motor has a 1600kg towing capacity (braked).

What is the MPG of the Volvo EX30?
The SM has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 145 mpg, the SM extended range has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 145 mpg and the Twin Motor offers 142 mpg.
