Slow to the proposition, but quick with the uptake (not unlike in the world of sport), the Australian people are now adopting zero-emission vehicles with an enthusiasm unlike any other country. As reported in the Guardian, some 158,000 sales took place between January and June 2026, as the fuel crisis and cost of living impacts the Aussie public as much as the UK taxpayers.
In the same timeframe, the volume of petrol and diesel options reduced by 14%. While the cost of combustion was a big factor in the move across, it is not the only reason for the transition. In Australia, there is a growing understanding, appreciation and admiration for EVs as they offer lower running costs, energy security (with solar panels everywhere) and help businesses attain the emissions targets now in place. But the connecting theme to the UK is the growth of confidence from the buyers.
Not just businesses and fleets who utilise EVs for their amazing tax benefits and cost-savings but for personal / retail customers who are making a more emotional purchasing decision.
The UK is in the midst of further all-electric growth, as we arrive at a time where vehicle choice is almost beyond plentiful and the resources / infrastructure continue to grow.

As reported in the BBC Peterborough is the latest city to push EV charging points around the area, with the members of the city council ready to accept £1m in funding from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority to support this endeavour. The company Believ are set to be awarded the contract so that some 1058 on-street charging solutions can be installed throughout the city.
This means that areas outside of workplaces, supermarkets and retail parks are about to become more BEV friendly. For visitors to Peterborough and for those residents without off-street charging facilities, this means a more convenient and accessible solution. While the project will take up to 4 years, this will be another key driver behind the pro-EV feeling in Britain. No longer are we seeing the vehicles as the reserve of businesses and the wealthy; these are genuinely affordable and viable motoring solutions for all. New and used.
For an integral brand like Mercedes, who continue to bring family-friendly (but fun) EVs like their new Mercedes-AMG CLA Shooting Brake, it is crucial the Government continues to keep the positivity moving for a robust uptake.
As you can read on the Mercedes website from £67,750 OTR the new CLA will include key highlights like the AMG-specific front, option Performance grille with illumination, AMG-specific precision-engineered Performance seats, a 3 axial motor drive train concept (with 680hp), individual paints like the Patagonia Red and Graphite Grey Magno matte paint, plus a whole host of technical features.
As featured on the configurator (at September 2026), you can choose between the:
Key colours include the polar white, cosmos black, aqua mint, sapphire blue, graphite grey magno, alpine grey and Patagonia red.
