Local news is an impactive part of the electric car transition. The sad reality is that much of the public opinion is based around pub-talk, local news and media plus hearsay. It’s not always based on honest and objective facts. One of the recent examples is the report in the BBC about an electric car fire on the M5 between Cullompton and Exeter.
What seems to be the case is that the transporter (combustion) has caught fire, leading to some 9 EVs catching fire. While a formal fire incident report remains to be provided, the initial reaction is to consider the fire risk of a BEV. From their inception there was an underlying concern that lithium-ion batteries would explode or more easily catch fire compared to our petrol or diesel options. Indeed, there were submissions that EVs were prone to spontaneously combust without cause.
While a number of pro-EV groups are using objective metrics and statistics to combat these misnomers, hearts and minds can be easily swayed by news headlines and conjecture. Thankfully the BBC article has referred to the car transporter fire but other articles online are bizarrely silent on this and instead are referring to the electric car fire alone. Words, we are reminded, can be more powerful than the sword.
Local to e-car lease is the town of Newton-Le-Willows / Earlestown and is an area which we support on a commercial level. A key leafy suburb in Merseyside, Newton has become important for many Manchester and Liverpool commuters, as a town equidistant to both cities. Additionally, the Haydock Racecourse attraction is only a couple of miles away and this brings about a significant amount of traffic and tourism.
Newton train station is a recently developed railway hub with significant car parking facilities for many local residents travelling to Liverpool or Manchester. It is areas like these which are so key to the transition and which need political and economic focus. As you will see on Zap Map there are currently charging solutions at the Shell petrol station, Haydock Racecourse, McDonald’s Earlestown and the Station too.
However, this is not adequate for the growing volume of vehicles visiting the area, as well as the local residents without off-road parking. With hundred+ parking spaces at the station, having AC and DC charging facilities are absolutely essential. This is why the new Mill Lane Esso will be including around 6 EV charging bays. Forming part of the Newton Local advertising, we are hoping to engage with the local council to help make this transition more seamless.
Having cost-effective and affordable EV solutions remains a key part of the movement. The BYD group, a large Chinese conglomerate, have been a big part of 2024 - 2025 EV uptake especially with their Seal saloon and Sealion & SUV. However, with personal customers and SMEs / small business needing cheaper lease options, the BYD team have expanded this segment with the ATTO2 and the car shown here - the Dolphin Surf.
