In a week dominated by the Ferrari Luce, the new love or hate super car EV, some of the other changes and developments within the UK’s electric car market have gone unnoticed. Even today (30 May 2026), the news is still awash with the stories surrounding the unveiling of the Luce and its purported impact and resonance for the ultimate car brand in the world.
But while focus may be on that, there are other key stories detailing the growth of China and its investment into EV batteries, infrastructure and software. As reported in the BBC there are key concerns that Europe will be unable to keep up with the progress and evolution which is happening in Asia.

Reporting from the Auto China 2026 car show, there are some clear indications that China is pushing to control electric mobility (not just cars) with some of their innovations and investment. Many key brands outside of China are now facing a big fight for survival, especially with China able to produce EVs as a much as 30% cheaper than the rest of the world.
Through state subsidies, clinical supply chains and continued investment, the Chinese car manufacturers are no longer chasing the West alone. They are now competing with each other within China itself. Brands like Xiaomi and Huawei are venturing into EV production, along with established brands like BYD and Geely.
Evolve or die, the European car makers now have some significant decisions to make. This explains why so many are now arranging joint ventures with China to share battery, software and architecture technology to keep their product modern enough.

So brands like Mercedes, with their recently revised CLA Shooting Brake (estate), need to ensure that they are at the forefront of the customer’s attention. The UK leasing market is true testament to this, with both new and used EVs exploding in popularity in 2026.
Confidence in long-term viability and suitability is very much here in Britain but, with that interest, comes higher levels of discernment and expectations.
For car brands, this means ensuring that UK customers do not feel at a disadvantage or loss with a European product compared to a Chinese one. Range, charging times, battery efficiency, costs, Bidirectional charging and software are now fundamental aspects to many customers.

Education and knowledge surrounding BEVs has rapidly increased since 2020. While the Mercedes CLA saloon and shooting brake has been available since 2025 in the UK, the German engineering team have decided to add another derivative – the 200.

Key colours include night black, polar white, aqua-mint, sapphire blue, high-tech silver and cosmos black and alpine grey. Additional options include trailer coupling with ESP trailer stabilisation and DC charging upgrade (so it can access 400V charging).
