Concerns over the reliability and the robustness of the electric car is still a present consideration in 2026. When you see articles from the BBC referring to the recent Tesla recall in China, aspects like maintenance and warranty – especially on a pre-registered vehicle – come to the buyer’s attention.
With regard to the Tesla situation, China has changed its policy on the hidden door handles approach which many EVs have been utilising as part of their aesthetics and ergonomics.
The issue with a “hidden” handle is what is the best policy in an emergency situation and how easy is it to access inside the vehicle during an emergency. Further to fatal crashes involving the Xiaomi EV, power failures led to the doors being unable to open.
The Chinese Government were not pleased with this aspect and made it mandatory for all cars to have mechanical releases on the inside and outside doors from 2027. As a result, some 2.98 million Chinese-made Tesla vehicles have been recalled to add safety measures to manage this proposition.
Thankfully, there has been little in the way of high-profile disasters involving a BEV, which emulates the above. Indeed, any measures which encourage safety should always be supported to cover the worst case scenarios, as even just one incident can railroad the UK’s transition from petrol / diesel into electric vehicles.
More recently, the driver who alleged his Jaguar I-Pace was “stuck at 80mph” was jailed for what was actually a considerable lie. But the impact in the news and media can be immediate, which is why a pre-registered vehicle can often trigger an immediate response for potential car or van leasing customers.
In essence, this is a vehicle which has been registered with the DVLA in order to secure a registration number and essentially brings that vehicle into existence in the UK. It does not mean that anyone has driven or utilised the vehicle however; many vehicles are registered while sat at a dealership compound or at the ports.
The exercise simply collates the VIN with the registration and triggers some key events. The biggest aspect is the vehicle warranty, which covers any mechanical defects on the vehicle caused through no fault of the driver. When you register the vehicle, this will start the clock ticking on the warranty which could be anywhere between 3 – 7 years long.
This is why a car leasing broker will often add the “Pre-Reg” to your quote and order, along with the registration number and the date of registration. In some cases, the time lapse between the registration and the delivery of the vehicle, can be 6 months, which for a 3 year+ lease deal with a 3-year vehicle warranty is clearly prevalent.
This is not something which is nuanced or concerning by brands. As you can read on the monthly SMMT stats many manufacturers will dispose of vehicles which are pre-registered as part of their strategy. In addition, for our fleet and leasing sector we operate in economies of scale.
As an individual customer, or small business, you are negotiating for one vehicle. When we create opportunities, we are committing to 50 – 200 vehicles at a time, which ultimately need to be registered and paid for. This assists the manufacturer to hit their relevant targets and volume aspirations, while allowing us to quickly dispose of the vehicles to customers who have a more urgent delivery requirement.
To balance the risk of the pre-reg, you can elect to utilise a funder-maintenance package. This ensures that all servicing, maintenance, tyres and breakdown recovery is included for the duration. When the vehicle falls outside of the manufacturer warranty, you at least have the comfort of the finance company absorbing the costs and risk associated with that vehicle. As the pre-reg also triggers the MOT due date, the maintenance package will cover that too.
For wonderful electric and security suppliers like the customers shown here, accessing a pre-registered deal on the Polestar 2 resulted in a fantastic outcome for two vehicles. With contract hire, the ability to use a vehicle and return it without any ownership or disposal concerns was a big draw for a business customer. Also, let’s not forget the big tax advantages:
Why would your electrical or security wholesale business look elsewhere when there are such great financial rationales behind the zero-emission strategy?
