The key to UK car sales is always confidence. This isn’t a new attribute, nor is it exclusive to the electric car segment. Whether a customer is buying or leasing, there needs to be an underlying confidence to make the sale.
Recent research from the IMI is suggesting that this is not as high as it could be with some 79% of respondents indicating that there was low confidence in the EV transition. Specifically, there is a concern that the EV transition cannot be safely and sustainably delivered in-keeping with the aims of the Government. A further 82% were concerned that the workforce would not be ready for the requirements.

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), much like the SMMT, are advocating that the ZEV Mandate review be brought forward for analysis and suitability. With Andy Burnham now in charge of the UK, the SMMT have made some calls on him to offer greater support for the transition to net zero.
More recently, the SMMT commented on the intention to “reindustrialise” Britain, with automotive being identified as a key part of this. With an £85 billion turnover, £18 billion investment into the UK and nearly 190,000 involved in skilled production, this industry is fundamental to the country.
The report goes on to discuss the impact of the EV models, the ZEV Mandate and the necessity for support and discounts to keep up with the ZEV Mandate. Yet again, the SMMT suggest that “we urgently need a review and reform and the window to do this is closing fast”.

With the restrictions of the ZEV Mandate biting fast, the pressure to produce zero-emission options is coming. This is perhaps why the Government are pushing more support via their Electric Car Grant , which now includes several options on both Band 1 and Band 2 levels of support.
Electric cars, and vans, are continuing to improve in terms of price, technology and battery capability. Amidst a more anti-combustion feeling in the news and media, the support for battery technology is very much increasing and this is influencing both our new and used EV markets.
Cheaper fuel costs, servicing costs, maintenance costs and better city-driving, there is a lot to be heartened about in this industry. In turn, this is helping brands, like Cupra, to re-invest into improving their already popular products. Of course, manufacturer profitability and manufacturing suitability is key too.
This is why we need to make sure that the political and economic tools continue to support confidence across the board.
