The future of electric transport in the UK cannot all be luxury and premium vehicles. In making the UK’s automotive market all-electric, or near to it by 2030, manufacturers will have to create an array of vehicle options.
This is especially so with smaller business and retail customers, where budget concerns are more pressing. The focus of car makers has to be on affordability. While the running costs are already a big win for anyone going to a BEV, the vehicle procurement exercise also needs to be cost-effective and price parity on combustion vs EV is a necessity.

This hasn’t always been the case and some manufacturers made the mistake of believing that UK drivers would pay a premium for an EV. This wasn’t the case, with many EVs being offered on company car and salary sacrifice schemes (where price is less sensitive) and therefore a masking of the underlying issue occurred.
With rising demands created by the ZEV Mandate, car makers are now addressing the predicament more clearly with a swathe of more PCH and PCP friendly alternatives, which do not break the bank and are more accessible to working people in the UK.
When the Stellantis conglomerate announced their new “E-Car” project on 19 May 2026, the focus on more affordable mobility was not a surprise to us. To be clear, there is no synergy between the e-car lease team here and the “E-Car” project with Stellantis, who create well-known cars like Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and Vauxhall. Due in 2028, the new e-cars are based on European, Emotion, Electric and Environmental friendliness.

Small and innovative, the new tranche of vehicles will address the small car segment and provide vehicles which a customer will love and trust. Stellantis are tapping into the Fiat Panda as inspiration for this, as production gets set to ramp up in 2028. The latest models will have cutting-edge design and will possess world-class BEV technology to help the next generation of drivers go electric.
But it isn’t just the Stellantis group in their endeavour to improve the small EV segment. Ford are also updating their cheap car option, the Puma Gen-E. Having found success in the UK leasing market in 2025, the Ford team are now invigorating the small hatchback / SUV further, with new specification and battery options. The Puma EV will continue to sit alongside the Explorer, Capri and Mustang Mach-E. As at May 2026, you can choose between

As at May 2026, the Puma EV is supported by the Band 1 Electric Car grant which you can peruse on the Gov website.
To upgrade your electric puma you can add options like the openable panoramic roof, detachable towbar, winter pack and interior black pack. Colours include frozen white, cactus grey, electric yellow, agate black, solar silver, fantastic red, digital aqua blue and vapour blue.
