The Ford Puma Gen-E gets the £3750 Grant

Is this your perfect No Deposit EV Lease deal - The Ford Puma Gen-E gets the £3750 Grant

The Ford group may be one of the brands which have perhaps become a little less relevant in the world of electrification. While the Mach-E was launched in 2020 / 2021, the team were notoriously quiet for some time until the Explorer and Capri SUV options were concurrently launched in 2024.

But for a brand which is known for cost-effective and affordable solutions, with their iconic Fiesta and Puma, it was somewhat confusing as to why an all-electric option had not been introduced. However, in 2025 the Ford team finally answered these doubts when the Puma was confirmed as available in an all-electric format.

Labelled as the “Gen-E” Puma, this small SUV was a great addition to the repertoire and almost certainly made the manufacturer’s intentions clear in what it wanted to do in the UK’s leasing market.

The Puma has since received a significant boost and some headline-hitting reviews as it became the first EV to receive the Band 1 Grant. As per the Gov website  there are two levels of financial support being offered to car makers - 1) £3,750 Band 1; and 2) £1,500 Band 2. Until last week ( 26 August 2025), there were only vehicles in the Band 2 category.

While on the surface, there has been an assumption that the grant qualification is based solely on the car value (£37,000 and under) this is not true. While a car must be an M1 passenger vehicle, produce 0g/km for CO2 from the tailpipe, have a 100 mile+ range (WLTP) and include the 3-year car warranty and the 8-year battery warranty, there are more finite elements which need to be carefully considered too.

We covered this extensively in a recent e-car blog  and this outlined other factors relating to science based targets, vehicle assembly location and battery production location. There is far more to the ECG than maybe what has been explained.

However, the Ford team proudly became the first manufacturer to benefit from the higher grant. Both the Puma and the E-Tourneo Courier  were confirmed as the first vehicles to enjoy this immense benefit. Indeed, the BBC reported on this seismic announcements  which saw both models within the Ford repertoire see massive reductions. Without a doubt this has re-focused many UK customers on the BEV transition, especially in the retail and consumer market.

Where we expect many customers to benefit is with the availability of no-deposit and low initial rental style arrangements. In traditional dealership and car supermarket circles there has been a fixation on higher capital commitments and bigger deposits.

Even some contract hire brokers have utilised an enhanced initial rental in order to make the monthly price seem more cost-effective and cheaper. However, around 2024 and 2025, the e-car lease team have noted that many private individuals / personal contract hire customers are moving away from this, as they become more financially sage and are more acclimated with the nuances of the contract.

The first payment you make is called the initial rental and, as you will note on the e-car website this is a configurable aspect to your arrangement. The rental will show as derivative of 1/3/6/9/12 on the website, as is the case on many of our competitors.

Taking the Puma as an example, if you signed up on a 6 + 35 deal, then you will note that the rental is £187.32 and the initial rental is £1123.92, creating an overall cost of £7,680.12. If you change the arrangement to a 12 spread, this provides you with a rental of £163.41, making the deal look cheaper.

However, this would necessitate a £1,960.92 initial rental and the overall cost would be £7,680.27. Conversely the 1 spread, or no deposit, deal would create a monthly price of £213.34 with an initial rental of just £213.34. Again, an overall cost of £7,680.24. So moving into bigger capital outlay does not always serve to make your total payable any better.

As the Puma benefits from nearly £4,000 of grant, this is clearly making the monthly rental significantly cheaper and therefore more likely to be affordable, even in the case of the no-deposit option. This really could be your dream deal.

While the Puma does offer exceptional value for many of our customers, it is worth noting that there are also many benefits and advantages with this vehicle; it does not lack in the equipment department. As at September 2025 you can choose from:
