New and exciting all-electric cars are fast incoming to the UK for 2024 - some cost-effective, some family-friendly and others will sit in the luxury segment.
And one of the most hotly anticipated EV’s to arrive is the SUV Porsche Macan, which at January 2024 is going through rigorous testing by the manufacturer. In petrol (and diesel) format, the smaller 4x4 to the Cayenne has been immensely popular in the Britain but with the Taycan saloon / cross-turismo / sport-turismo battery performance vehicle also proving to be popular, it wasn’t going to be too long before the German prestige manufacturer made some changes.
Based on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the upcoming Macan is set to be sportier, precise and more efficient in order to deliver the high standards which many Porsche customers expect.
One of the big aspects of this all-electric Macan is the optimised aerodynamics, which has been achieved via the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA). Vehicle range is of course one of the biggest factors which electric car customers have to consider within their suitability asessment and the architecture / tech will contribute immensely to this.
With an automatically extending rear spoiler, active cooling flap and flat floor, the streamlined Macan is measuring a drag coefficient of 0.25, which essentially makes this one of the most aerodynamically efficient SUVs on the market. And in terms of battery configuration, the Macan will have a gross battery of 100 kWh with 95 kWh usable, making it somewhat larger than the Taycan with its 93.4 kWh and 83.7 kWh respectively.
But not unlike the Taycan the 800-volt charging capability will feature. This translates to peak DC charging of circa 270 kW. Expect 10-80% charging times of just under 25 minutes. AC charging will start at 11 kW AC but expect the 22 kW to be an upgradable option.
Where the Macan is a little surprising, even to the e-car team, is just how capable the vehicle’s performance is. With 450kW (or 612ps), this sporty SUV will be capable 0 - 62 times just under 4 seconds. And some 1000nM of torque too! While this new option is still undertaking rigorous testing - “from minus 30 degrees Celsius in Scandinavia to plus 50 degrees Celsius, as we experienced in Death Valley in California” - we are hoping to receive some further update on what configurations and technical specifications will be available with this option. Porsche do have a newsroom update which may be useful. Or you can chat with our electric experts here at e-car lease.
While amazing luxury EVs like this, or the upcoming all-electric full size Range Rover , are clear indications that manufacturers are addressing their ZEV Mandate obligations, there is clearly some work, which we all need to contribute to, in order to cement a robust electric car industry.
As the BBC reported only a few days ago “If electric cars are ever to become mainstream, then we are going to need a lot more places to charge them.” While not an untrue observation, there are some key elements which do need adding to provide some context. In their latest EV survey, our charge point location partners, Zap Map, discovered some interesting facts including:
As Zap Map data shows, the UK has surpassed 50,000 charging locations for electric car drivers. And many new initiatives are being rolled out during 2024. Already this year we have seen BT commencing their conversion of street cabinets to EV chargers throughout the UK (which could see up to 60,000 repurposed), the UK’s first airport charging hub was unveiled at London Gatwick by Gridserve and Sainsbury’s supermarket confirmed a commitment to roll-out new ultra-rapid charging facilities (150kW) in 100 locations and covering 750 bays.
In city-centres more niche ideas are being implemented with lampposts being converted into charging locations, charge points which can be embedded in the pavement and even mobile solutions which can be driven to the vehicle. But drivers do have to take some responsibility on this and become more aware of the charging environment around them. Simply download the Zap Map app to see the different facilities around your home or work before you commit to your new car and this will help prevent any unnecessary issues.
