This week (20 March 2024) has been a positive one for the electric vehicle movement. In some key EV infrastructure news, it was confirmed that a big boost would be coming to ensure dedicated chargepoint funding will be coming from the  Government.

An additional 44 councils will be getting access to the Local Electric Vehicle (LEVI) fund, so that local chargepoints can be installed. With councils like Torbay and Tess Valley approved, some £185 million worth of funding has now been approved. And this is a direct answer to some of the quandaries and conundrums within the electric transport debate - are there enough charging hubs and infrastructure to ensure the UK can meet the demands under the ZEV mandate? 

We do monthly updates from our partners over at Zap Map which shows 57,000 devices in over 32,000 locations! But confidence is key; and the reality is that much of this needs to happen from top down. By the government setting out a clearly strategy to support charging locations for local residents, this cements the message about the future of our transportation. In particular, this combats some of the communications about reasons not to go into electric vehicles, with locations to charge your vehicle being high on that agenda.

And already councils are making move with their own fleets in conjunction with this. Our local council,  St Helens , are busily installing chargepoints across key locations within the Borough such as the Hardshaw Brook Depot. But their own fleet has also been updated with electric Ford Transits, Toyota Proace vans and a number of recycling vehicles now being in all-electric format.

A fleet of 34 electric vehicles now support the St Helens area. Again, by taking the lead with their fleet, this demonstrates to the local constitution the importance of zero-emission vehicles and technology. With much to do by 2030, these initiatives are fundamental. 

Having suitable products is also key to this transition. And having one of the most hotly anticipated EVs of 2024 come to fruition certainly helps. Yesterday, it was announced that the rival to the Porsche Macan Electric, Fisker Ocean, Tesla Model Y Performance and Polestar 3 would be coming.

The new Audi Q6 / SQ6 E-tron Estate has now been announced and committed to production. Building on the smaller Q4 SUV, this new innovation will be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) which is a by-product of a venture with Porsche. This dedicated EV platform is set to offer some considerable driver experiences and at a smaller cost than your Porsche would set you back.

When is it live to price and order? The Q6 e-tron lease will be going live on our website this week (March 2024), so that our personal and business customers can review the specification and EV functionality. But how does the standard Audi Q6 E-Tron EV perform? 

This AWD SUV will have a 94.9 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.9 seconds, 130 mph top speeds and 285kW (or 382hp). Expect a combined winter range of 240 miles with warmer weather allowing for 320 miles – a 285 mile combined.

On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 10 hour and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 270 kW DC maximum allowing 21 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 526L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 122 mpg. You can tow with this EV – 750kg (Unbraked) and 2400kg (Braked). It also has no V2L or V2G capabilities (so far). The Heat Pump is standard.

But how does the performance Audi Q6 e-Tron SQ6 EV perform?

On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 10 hour and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 270 kW DC maximum allowing 21 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 526L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 117 mpg. You can tow with this EV – 750kg (Unbraked) and 2400kg (Braked). It also has no V2L or V2G capabilities (so far). The Heat Pump is standard.
