At a time when EVs are recording milestone sales, as you can see reported in the Times, the confidence for brands to continue their line of innovation and improvement, is very much improving.

While the UK's success in 2026 is partly due to foreign conflicts impacting the cost of petrol and diesel, this watershed moment of creating dissatisfaction and distrust in oil companies is what has brought more potential drivers into the battery electric format.
For the last 5 - 6 years, those involved in the sale and procurement of BEVs have needed to overly-sell the benefits and justify the need to move into zero-emission technology, with so much trust, faith and confidence having been placed in the combustion engine.

However, recent events have perhaps rocked this confidence, as noted in the Times article. But let's not forget other initiatives in the UK which are continuing to help - EV grants for specific cars and vans, charge point funding for workplaces and residents in flats, moves to increasing ease of planning for charge points for those without off-road parking, better used-EV certification and of course improved vehicle tech and capability.
Compare the average range of a new EV in 2026 vs 2020, to see how quickly the UK's EV market has evolved!
There is probably no one European manufacturer who has invested in range more so than the BMW group. The German automotive engineers are the type of brand who have used the competition from China and Tesla to re-invest and essentially reinvigorate their offering.

Beginning with the medium SUV iX3 early in 2026, which now has a 40 and 50 format, the group then recently introduced their i3 saloon with some eye-watering capability. Not one to rest on their success, in July 2026 the group confirmed that their bigger SUV, the BMW iX5, would also be available to order. Continuing their Neue Klasse direction, the new iX5 is not there to follow a trend. In the words of BMW this will "set standards" and a big part of this is the vehicle range which is set to be at 525 miles (WLTP) or 415 miles (real world range).
Before we move onto the overview of the iX5, it is probably worth clarifying the notion of range. For many years, the UK car industry has often pushed the WLTP analysis of range, being a strict factory testing of an EV from 100% battery down to 0%.
While the testing is utilised to create a set of vehicle metrics, this is not altogether useful or realistic. So much so, e-car lease partner exclusively with the EVDB to provide more well-rounded figures and overview of every EV we lease in the new car market.

Why is this important? Because an EV will perform very differently based on the conditions in which it operates. With key factors like vehicle speeds, acceleration, external temperature, battery pre-conditioning and applications within the vehicle being utilised all relevant, the use of one figure quickly becomes a peculiar notion. However, as we go through 2026, we no longer have the potential pitfall of a customer leasing a car with not enough range.
We actually face the potential issue of a customer leasing a vehicle with a battery, and range, well beyond what they actually need. For some, budgets and finances still are a key motivator behind their vehicle decision, regardless of the fuel type.
Using the new BMW iX5 as an example, you can see the differences which varying conditions pose:

With a battery usable size of 141 kWh the iX5 has one of the biggest setups for vehicles on sale in the UK. While high-mileage drivers, especially those who utilise motorway commutes, will almost certainly appreciate the comfort and practicality of the range, there are more low-mileage drivers who need to assess if they really need this capability.
This is especially so when there are similar options, cars or brands, for a cheaper monthly price. It begs the question – how much range is too much range?

For those UK lease customers heading towards the iX5, it is fair to say a good decision is almost certainly being made. Breaking new ground in its X form, the monolithic exterior is pushing a more commanding vehicle presence.
The sporty, yet elegant exterior, is underpinned by the express LED headlights and double X icons. Every much a family vehicle, the innovative inside includes the free-cut central display, the BMW Panoramic Vision and the option BMW Passenger Screen, so both driver and passenger can have a digital experience.
With space for 5 adults, a panoramic glass sunroof (which can open at the front for a cool blast of air), BMW Symbiotic Drive, intelligent AI on board and a wide array of cameras and sensors, this is the next generation of driving and comfort.

Some of the other key features will include the crafter door surfaces, a gentle ergonomically perfected winglet to open and close doors, easy-open booth, 21” - 23” alloys, exclusive accents, Veganza and Individual leather, Performance Control and more. The iX5 will be available in Vancouver Green, Pine Grey, Dravit Grey, Black Sapphire and Tanzanite Blue. Find out more on the BMW website.
