The Citroen C5 Aircross Comfort Electric Car Lease - Your Definitive Guide
The Electric Car Grant (ECG) is now in action for new cars in the UK, which means that any vehicles purchased or leased by a consumer or business will benefit from a separate financial contribution from the Government.
This is not something which the customers need to complete, as in an application form, but is instead something the manufacturer is arranging with the Government by satisfying their criteria for the grant which has been offered in two separate bands - Band 1 (£3,750) and Band 2 (£1,500).
The reality for some manufacturers who are building the batteries and assembling the vehicles outside of the UK, is that they will be unable to benefit from these contributions. In a recent article, we discussed how Leapmotors are launching a new B10 SUV and this could benefit from a self-invested grant of £3,750 which the manufacturer has applied to its own cars.
Another Chinese organisation, BYD, are also in the same conundrum of being unable to access these financial incentives and so have instead used other marketing approaches to combat the expectations of the UK customer.
Only this week (4 August 2025) BYD announced that they will be offering 5-year servicing on selected new and used EVs for UK customers. Launching with the Dolphin, Dolphin Surf and Atto 3 or ANY used BYD option, this scheme will ensure that all scheduled services and labour are covered.
With most models based on a 2 year or 12,000 mile interval, this is one cost of vehicle usership which is being taken care of by the manufacturer; the driver will simply fuel, insure and take care of any tyre replacements on their BYD.
The group are also increasing their battery warranty to 8 years or 155,000 miles as part of driving customer confidence in the longevity of their product. With more UK customers, including here at e-car lease, turning towards used EVs, having grounded infrastructure to deliver confidence and supportive messages is paramount. While BYD may not need to follow up with any grants after this announcement (check the Gov website for qualifying electric cars under the ECG ) they will remain observant on their registrations.
As set out in the SMMT the statistics for vehicle registrations in the UK for July 2025 are now live. In a month where 140,154 vehicles were registered, some 29,825 were a BEV.
This means that pure electric cars accounted for 21.3% of the total vehicles registered, with this being a 9.1% increase on July 2024. As the dedicated SMMT electric section highlights there have been 254,666 BEVs registered so far in 2025, which is a 31% year on year improvement.
As a market share, electric cars are 21.5% of the UK current market. The obvious point is that the ZEV Mandate, a Government tool dictating the sale of zero-emission vehicles in the UK, is placing obligations on all manufacturers to ensure that a certain percentage of their new vehicles are zero-emission.
For 2025, this is 28%. With car makers like BYD, because much of their product is either pure electric or plug-in electric hybrid, they do have a distinct advantage over more mixed manufacturers. The BYD team managed to register 3,184 vehicles in July; this is some margin above the 984 vehicles registered by their main competitor Tesla.
A ”mixed” bag of cars and vans, the Citroen group are under far more pressure to ensure their product demographics remain in line with the Government expectations or they will face financial penalties under the ZEV rules.
In a well-publicised statement, the group confirmed that their brand would be the first recipient of the ECG. While this can be seen on the Citroen brand’s website the Government actually published this confirmation in a statement which saw 4 models to be benefactors including the e-C3, e-C4, E-Berlingo and their new e-C5. It is the latter SUV which is our focus in today’s review.
Spacious, comfortable and high-tech, the e-C5 Aircross is defined as the epitome of what Citroen have made in their history. With a new £1,500 ECG saving, this is likely to be noticed by many of our personal and business leasing customers.
The brand are asserting some bold aero designs, XL comfort and space for passengers and family along with best-in class technology for encouraging EV drivers to make the switch to this SUV. Key features like the Z-Zen lounge with waterfall screen, matrix LED headlights, advanced comfort seats, extended space and robust range are being propagated as key facets of this vehicle.
In the all-electric version of this new option you can choose from:
Colours include Eclipse Blue, Perla Nera Black, Ruby Red, Okenite White, Platinum Grey and Astoria Green. Key additional options include the Heat Pump (heat pump heats the passenger compartment much more efficiently than a conventional heating system. It consumes 4 to 6 times less energy and thus preserves battery autonomy) and the removable towbar.
