April 2026 was a momentous month for electric cars in the UK, as we registered our 2,000,000th EV!

The mission to make the UK an all-electric marketplace has been a huge endeavour for the many parties making this happen – manufacturers, dealerships, leasing brokers, finance companies, charge point companies, electricity companies, the Government - to name a few.

Considering there have been times when the entire prospect of electric cars has been doubted and considered to be a doomed proposition, the fact we have managed to get to this point is an achievement. But the tide is very much turning, as electric vehicles are now on par, if not cheaper, than petrol / diesel options to buy or lease.

When you consider running costs in terms of the fuel and the service / maintenance, you soon have strong financial arguments for pursuing battery technology over combustion equivalents.

The statistics for April 2026, continued to be particularly positive, as we have pictured below. The key facts include:

•  149,247 vehicles were registered (a 24% increase on 2025)
•  39,084 BEVs were registered (a 59.1% increase on 2025)
• BEV have a market share of 26.2% in April 2026 compared to 20.4% in 2025
•  2,012,758 EVs have been registered in the UK up to the end of April 2026
•  Year to date, BEVs represent 23.1% of the overall car market 

New Car Registrations – April 2026

The continued increase in electric registrations is testament to the UK’s personal and business markets, which are healthily enjoying the influx of new and used EV deals. We are now in a place where understanding, knowledge and information is at a point whereby confidence is present enough for many customers to make the transition.

While this is still a little behind the expectations of the ZEV Mandate, we are noticing some recognisable successes.

One brand - Geely – which is looking to move more into the UK automotive market, has brought yet another SUV solution to fruition. Having launched the EX5 SUV in three specifications already, the group have elected to introduce another option.

The Ultra will be a refreshed version with a bigger battery, more specification and increased towing capacity. In addition to the new colour of Rainforest Green, the Ultra will have key options like the 360 degree camera, panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, 16-speaker audio system, 19” alloys, 15.4” infotainment screen, navigation, wireless charging, synthetic leather upholstery, HUD, front seat ventilation and massage function.

As per the Geely EX5 website this model will enjoy the 8 year (125,000) vehicle warranty, 8 year (125,000) battery warranty, 4 years roadside assistance cover and 2 years of 4G data. 

How does the new EX5 Ultra perform? 

•  Ultra - this FWD SUV will have a 68.4 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 7.6 seconds, 109 mph top speeds and 160kW (or 215hp). Expect a combined winter range of 190 miles with warmer weather allowing for 260 miles – a 225-mile combined. On charging, the 11kW AC max will allow 7 hour and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 120 kW DC maximum allowing 30 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 461L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 133 mpg. You can tow with this vehicle – 750kg (Braked). The new Geely EX has Bidirectional Charging - a V2L exterior type 2 outlet. The Heat Pump is available as a standard option.
