The electrification of our automotive market is rarely off the agenda nowadays. To some degree this is not a surprise when the ZEV Mandate, which was imposed by the Government, rests above every car manufacturer looking to sell their vehicles in the UK.
So much so, the House of Commons were again discussing the pros and cons of the current environment in a recent electric vehicles and infrastructure briefing.
As the report on this identifies, the team of MPs were looking at the progress on EVs (which we will look at below), the impact of the ZEV Mandate which expects 80% zero-emission by 2030, charging infrastructure for homes and workplaces, electricity demand and infrastructure plus the sustainability and recycling behaviours underpinning this market. As each month goes by, the political and economic powers must overview the state of affairs, as they try to assess if the aspirations under the mandate are actually achievable.
Measuring this metric every month are the team at SMMT, who produce regular monthly updates on the UK’s car and van sales market . As at June 2025, the reports are overwhelmingly positive for electric cars (BEVs) with a sizeable number registered June 2025 - 47,354.
The 39.1% increase on 2024, is a robust improvement and does demonstrate that zero-emission is moving in the right direction. With a market share of 24.8% for June, this is still behind the ZEV Mandate of 28% but is nevertheless on route to achieving the lofty ambitions. For 2025, there have been 225,000 all-electric vehicle registrations, which constitutes a 21.6% market share so far this year.
Before the naysayers jump on these statistics, the market share of BEVs is a marked improvement on last year; 16.6% of vehicles registered in Jan-Jun 2024 were zero-emission. Within the top-sellers list for June, the Tesla group yet again appear in 3rd and 6th with their Model Y and Model 3 respectively. After a brief hiatus, following Elon Musk’s notoriety, the US EV brand seems to be making a concerted effort for British drivers.
It isn’t just Tesla who are looking to capitalise on the improving confidence for new and used EVs in the UK. Kia, the South-Korean powerhouse, is now looking to push their bigger family 7-seater SUV with more enthusiasm. With their smaller EV3 and medium-sized EV6 already proving to be popular, the Kia group are now aiming to control an immensely popular car segment.
The age of MPV and people-carrying vehicles is now diminishing, with many personal and business customers now opting for family-derived SUVs which can offer the 7-person facilities. With a higher driving position, improved aesthetics and impressive technology, the “comfort you can configure” is very much driving you towards sustainability. Having launched more formally in 2024, the Kia team have added another option to the line-up in the form of the EV9 GT .
“It’s all about the journey” so says the tagline for the new GT version of this 7-seat EV. With 800V charging capabilities, GT power performance, sharp aesthetics and design plus an 8-year battery warranty, the SUV is blending sports performance with sleek elegance and comfort.
